Burning mouth syndrome

Anyone else out there currently have this.  Mine erupted at the same time as chronic gum disease.  Keen to hear other experiences.

Hi Maureen the same thing has happened to me dry mouth funny taste just a weird feeling in my mouth I also have very bad gum deseise and tmj help is what I want !!! The dentist sent me to a peridontal specialist so far I have paid out loads and not getting very far. Just feeling weird I'm 60 and feeling like I've aged badly in the last year. Good luck what's your next move ?

He Lesley, thanks for your reply.  Next move is to ask gp to do a bit more.  Dentist can't do much for the bms.  Am to have undergum cleaning done and then in time likely gum surgery for deep pockets.  Interestingly, all this kicked off at the end of Feb.  Saw dentist end of jan and all as fine.  Cut a long story short, think my dentist has been a bit neglectful over the years but not a lot i can do to prove it.

So, i thought pain was gum disease (huge bleeding from one tooth in particular was the starting point, further bleeding from gums in general and have lost lots of gum around two front teeth which is horrible, gums have receded very badly and mouth, particulary the ridge of the palate and my tongue were burning, nippy, tingly all the time.)  After several weeks of this, mouthwash, toothpastes, new brushes, floss, interdental brushes, vit supplements, antibiotics, visit to emergecny weekend service and more antibiotics, eventally got refererred to a periodontist who confirmed what everyone else had said whcih was advanced gum disease but also bms.  You;d think my dentist of 25 years plus would have known this.

so like you, have 2 problems whcih have to be related.  Have had blood tests to rule out other things.  My own feeling is that this is stress/hormone/anxiety related - essentially HORMONES of some sort or another.  Am to speak with gp on monday by phone to discuss next step.  Oral medicine is not really an option since the dept is short staffed, no consultant blah blah, so gp is all I have.  Not sure if dental treatment will help or not.  Time wil tell.  I am just 56 and an worried that i will be unable to continue to work, keep solvent and keep house etc.

Sorry for long reply, it's never a short story is it?

Maureen I can relate to all of this I haven't seen my go only dentist and hospital for tmj. I also feel my long term dentist who retired 4yrs ago should have seen this starting, I xhad a hysterectomy 12yrs ago and have been going down hill for the last 4yrs my new dentist is ok but I feel as though getting all my answers from Google then telling her what to do.lol I found an interesting article in the Daily mail last week a new on the market end of last yr for halting gum deseise it's a pill called Periostat my peridontist has not mentioned this I have had my gums under cleaned and it worked for a while now another 2 teeth out and then she wants to do surgery but not up for that as the cost is exteam and it will only work for a while my gums have receded a lot with the cleaning and my teeth look rubbish so I'm going to leave the peridontist and just deal with my dentist hopefully she will prescribed that new tab and then I use their hygienist and what will be will be. Good luck. Please don't give to much money to the peridontil I to think hormonal anxiety and stress and have tried all suppliers think I'm going to rattle.lol

Oh god Lesley that's awful.  I too am heading for the gum surgery whcih freaks me out beyond belief.  Am tempted to go down the dentures route and be done with it.  Do feel dentists let us down badly.  i am down to 40 pr cent bone in some places and cant believe my own dentist didn;t see this coming.  Not a lot we can do now tho.  My feeling is that I will go ahead with the gum cleaning - not looking forward to it - and will then see how many gums will need surgery - major freak out.  How did you find the gum cleaning!  Problem is we have the bms too, so two different issues but related.  what a bleedin nightmare.  Keep in touch.  think you should see your gp for pain relief at the very least.

I'm in epsom surrey, the cleaning wasn't to bad they did it in 1/4 of the mouth at a time, but the gums have really receded looking at having my crowns renewed but worried about that incase my front teeth become unstable, I have the tmj as well as dry mouth and they both aggravate the gum deseise. Where are you ? So nice to speak to some how has the same problem .x

      Hi

Am in Edinburgh.  I read about the gums receding after cleaning. I had necrotising gingivitis (again dentist has no idea why but reckons it was stress related) and lost loads of gum aruond one eye tooth in particular - reckon that tooth will have to go after cleaning since bone loss is at 60% there.  Better start  saving my pennies for the dental plate. So upset about all of this which of course is not helping the bms.  Am off to O2 this weekend to see Electric Light Orchestra so am planning on packing in the painkillers to see me through.  What a carry on.

Anyway, at least we now have each other to share this awful stuff - bet there are few who are dealing with the bms and dental nightmares!! Mx
