The INR is the test to determine how long it takes your blood to clot and the amount of Warfarin prescribed is adjusted accordingly.  14mg seemed an awful lot to me and i googled it but it seems it is not that unusual.  I take 2.5mg a day which keeps my levels at around 2.5 to 2.7, if i go above 3 my dosage is adjusted. Do you still see the vascular doctor Michelle?  Can you ask him for a prognosis?  It is awful when they dont tell you what is happening or give you any advice.

    Hi Michelle

The main thing I was told was to walk at least 10 min a day, and have my leg elevated the rest of the time, whenever I sit or lie down.

Also stay away from green veg as they are high in vitamin k which actually helps blood to thicken, and this plays havoc with your INR.

And make sure that u take the warfarin at EXACTLY the same time every day.

I hope that helps. I'm hoping to be off my warfarin by June, but even by sticking to the above my INR also tends to be on the low side. It is extremely sensitive so who knows. wink

    Good luck!

You should not stay away from  green veg and salad, that is a misconception, what you must do is be consistent with the amount you eat.  If you eat none and then one day eat some, your INR will be badly affected.  I eat green veg and salads, quite a lot inf act but its regular amount I eat during a week and my INR levels are consistent.

I suppose they rather not take a chance in the first 6 months. I am hoping to be off Warfarin by June so I have stayed away from greens altogether as that is what I was advised. If the clot has not cleared enough after 6 months then there is a good chance that I will be on Warfarin for life, in which case I will then definitely introduction greens back.

I ended up with a PE despite my INR being 5.7 so I follow the instructions I was given very closely. Rather safe than sorry, so for now I will follow my Dr's orders to the letter.
