Heamoglobin levels - can they fluctuate ??

Posted , 4 users are following.

Hello all here.  I posted recently that after some unconnected tests at a hospital I was advised to see my GP (family doctor) to query my blood test results.

I did that but the temp doc I saw just said my heamoglobin had been raised for 14 years so just don't bother about it - and to be honest I was happy with this at the time.

Now spoken to hospital who say GP should have taken more blood tests, because my heanogloblin was raised.  So now I have now made an appt. to see another GP (family doctor) in a couple of weeks.

What I want to ask here are what are acceptable heamoglobin levels?  Can one have slightly raised or fluctuating levels that are acceptable?

No idea what mine are yet, but will try and get a print out at next appointment.

Sorry if I've rambled, but everyone here understands and is so knowledgeable..  Thanks.  j

Without going into it, high level are dangerous. It's not for me to tell you the dangers but DO NOT let the issue be ignored. I will put as politely as I can, the doctor who advised against further treatment should go get a job on a building site. Maybe not compentant enough for that job either.

Thanks clem, you made me laugh.

I just don't want to make a fuss if maybe everyone has fluctuating levels, and maybe (maybe?) mine are just 'slightly' riased so not worth investigating.  j

Regardless of what any abnormalities occur in your blood, it has to be investigated and treated no matter how minor. After all its the oil that keeps your engine ticking over.

Thank you.  I like to be armed with as much information as possible, so have to wait and see what next doctor says in a couple of weeks then.  Very much appreciate your reply.  j

In australia normal is 8 to 17

Mine was 19 for years and ny doctors never said anything.

But its not just the hemoglobin levels that go up. But your haematocrit levels also raise. Anything over 48 is a concern.

Thanks pete. Females are a bit lower aren't they?

I still don't understand what haemocrit levels are though I have read about them.

Hope you don't mind if I ask, your reading of 19 was eventually acted on was it ?  What promoted more investigation after years of that level being untreated?

It gave me a blood clot that gave me a heart attack. Should of killed me on the spot . Main artery 100% blocked. But i was so fit. Hardly affected me. So i decided to do my own researchm and did a full blood check thru a haematologist (blood specialist )

Only takes 2 days to get results

Still live a normal life just itching and fatigue

Ask ur doc to refer you to haematologist and you will get your answers
