Given Amitrityline for burning mouth syndrome

i am feeling very nervous at the moment. I don't know anyone with burning mouth syndrome and have just started on this drug. I started 3 days ago on 10mg and then increased to 20mg. Apart from feeling groggy first thing in the morning I felt that my symptoms were slightly better until today when my mouth has become very dry and my mouth is worse today than it has been for a while. Should I perservere with it and hope that the drug will start  to work soon.

Amitriptyline and other similar drugs do cause a dry mouth. It is one of the highest reported side effects. I got round this by sipping water or juice throughout the day. It's worth a try I think. Hope it works for you in the long term

Thanks for the info. My mouth is constantly burning and I think I panicked thinking that by taking this drug I was making it worse. How long does it take to kick in?

It varies with everyone. I sometimes get a dry mouth after nearly 2 years of amitriptylime but its short lived. Dont worry about it.

3 - 6 weeks I think. Once the initial 2 - 3 weeks have passed you should start to notice the dry mouth gets better and the meds started working. I wish you well

Stephen I hope it's helping you. I have read that this drug is given for a variety of painful causes but unsure whether it will help me as no one else seems to have taken for burning mouth.

One of the symptoms of Burning Mouth Syndrome can be a dry mouth, one of the side effects of Amitryptyline is dry mouth, I have been on Amitryptyline for a long time and have always had dry mouth from it my dose has recently been lowered from 50mg a day to 10mg a day and this has helped a bit for me not as dry as I used to be. So it may ease up for you or it may not everyone reacts differently for me I just have to have water with me or have access to it wherever I go (not as much now but in the past was a necessity).

Hi Becky, thank you very much for the info you have given me. I have had burning mouth syndrome for 1 month now and I've lost a stone in weight. I'm hoping the Amitripyline works been on it for 4 days now. Hope to see some improvement in the next couple of weeks or so.

I have a burning mouth and dont take amitriptiline (stopped  after a few days when i felt spaced out and drove into a car park kerb...in slow motion)

?I had a burning mouth before i took amitrip and it has continued. Some research shows it's due to lack of vitamin B (though the vitamin has made no difference to my symptom)

I would love to get rid of it

Hi Shaq, I wake up and feel drowsy on Amtrip but by mid morning I'm fine. I have been tested for vitamin B inclB12 and I'm fine. I believe it takes a few days to get into your system and the side effects should wear off. This is my fifth day and this morning it's not to bad, but ice been here before and then it flares up again. I'll let you know how I get on with the Amtrip.x

It was new to me until I got it Kimberley. I can't tell you how painful  it is at times, As far as I know there is no cure for it. It can go on its own or in my case I'm hoping the medication works.
