How painful is a laparoscopy? How long does it take to recover?

I'm 22 and am scheduled to have a laparascopy in a few weeks time to see if I have endometriosis. I've never had surgery and am worried mainly about the idea of general anaesthetic but also the pain. How painful is a laparoscopy? Also how long does it take to recover? Is it realistic to expect I will be able to go back to work within a few days (I work on my feet all day)?

It has been so long for me that I don't recall the pain element, especially in light of other surgeries I've had since. I think I had mine on a Thursday, stayed that night & the next at a friend's, and was back hoofing more than 4 miles daily, lugging heavy law books and attending classes by Monday ,,, and by the next Thursday I was risking hemorrhaging. Had to get flat on my back again. Ask your doctor about the work and be very clear about exactly what you do on your feet all day.

Have you ever had any other surgery?
