How many years after SCFE surgery did you get a total hip replacement?

Hi all,

Its been almost 15 years since my first SCFE srugery. My hip pain has really changed in the last year after being pregnant and having my first baby. I am going to see a joint replacement specialist in a month to talk about a hip replacement. Over the years I have developed a mild case of scoliosis and my range of motion is absolutley non existent in my left hip. It is so frustrating and I haven't even been able to wokr out lately because my hip hurts so bad.

I have seen an orthopedic surgeon before and he told me that basically once the pain has started to effect my daily life, I can't do what I normally do anymore, then it is time.

I feel like i'm there and I was curious out of all of you who have had hip replacemtns post SCFE surgery, how old you were and what your experieince has been.

Any doctors on here have suggestions about timing and longevity ofhip replacements these days?

Thank you so much! any responses would be awesome for my peace of mind.

    Hi Kirby

Just a thought, you might find more responses to your question and experiences on facebook page : SUFE Slipped Upper Femoral (Capital) Epiphysis - originally set up to exchange experiences, outcomes etc of sufferers.  My family is at the 'early' stages, my son is 13 and has been on crutches for 3 years, so awaiting more surgery and early hip replacement.  Be lovely if you could join us on facebook.

    Regards

      Hi Ruth-

I have "liked" this page and commented on it. Hopefully we can get more people on it to raise awareness and provide information for people seeking guidance and advice. It has been hard to find in my research recently!

Wow, your son has been on crutches for 3 years? Why so long? Did he have the surgery to get it pinned? Poor thing. I can't imagine being on crutches for that long. rolleyes

Thank you so much for replying on here! I hope I can get some more information from other people to give me some peace of mind.

      Hi There

I'll check out the facebook page, I couldn't see that you had requested to join the group, so I don't know if it is the same facebook page.

He is still on crutches, as his femoral head has a saddle shaped deformity, and a nobbly bit is blocking some movement.  A percentage of the blood supply was re-established after the initial pinning and he also had an external fixator on for 4 months (to take the weight off the hip whilst healing) and bisphosphonate treatment (trialled in Australia), and this helped to preserve some of the femoral head and stop it from completely collapsing whilst he had avascular necrosis.  Because he was toe touch weight bearing for so long, this reduced the muscle strength needed once he was allowed to put weight back on the leg.  So we are just contemplating more surgery to try an re-shape it, and, along with intensive physio this could make it possible for him to walk again.  Fingers crossed, we are off for a second opinion at Stanmore, did you go there for your treatment?

    Hello Kirby,

I had a SCFE in 2003, and now 13yrs later (age 25) I am 11days post from a Anterior Hip Replacement.

I have lived with a bit of hip pain since my SCFE, so I always just pushed it to the back of my mind. Didn't think much about it. Over the past year my discomfort was progressively getting worse. It bothered me every single day, I had very little range of motion (like you almost non existent), I couldn't lay on my left side without my entire leg hurting. I finally decided to go to the doctor thinking they would get me in physical therapy but instead he said it needed to be replaced. He sent me to get a second opinion because I'm so young, and the other doctors immediately said the same thing. They all agreed that I was suffering from osteoarthritis, and the only thing to do was replace it.

Here we are 2 months later, and i've got myself a new shiny hip. Now let's talk about the surgery. The surgens seem to be making light of this operation so let me tell you my experience. They are going to tell you its a piece of cake. When what they mean is after the first couple of weeks it's not so bad. The first week was absolutely awful, then about day 8 I hit a turning point! Yesterday was good, and today was even better! Here I am day 11 with zero hip pain, sore muscles here and there, but no hip pain.

I highly suggest you find the forum Bone Smart. There you will find tons of people who are pre-op total hip replacements and then when your on the other side those of us who are post-op. I have found reading everyone's different experiences, and the tried and true do's and don'ts has kept me sane through this whole ordeal.

    Best of luck to you.
