I'm 28 years old and have just been diagnosed with Thyrotoxicosis (Graves disease) I'm currently taking 2 20mg Carbimazole and 1 80mg of Propranolol daily. I've been on these meds since June this year when I was rushed to hospital from a general appointment with my GP. I don't know what to expect I feel like I'm piling weight on and my hair is thinning I have started to suffer from chest pains and palpitations. I'm waiting to hear from the hospital about wearing a portable ecg to monitor my heart. Also I haven't contacted my doctor about this but my eyes have become puffy and I'm terrified I'm getting symptoms of thyroid eye disease.. I just want to be back to my normal self and look how I did before its really getting me down.

Hi Amy, the first thing I'd say is try not to panic, easy to say I know but trust me this will get sorted! I was diagnosed with graves 4 years ago had a thyroid storm was hospital for two weeks, then had block and replace that worked until the beginning of this year when I had to have RAI - which I found out this week has removed too much of my thyroid so now have to take meds for ever - but I feel fine! It can take a while to get your levels stable but they'll get it right!! I know how you feel and this forum was a great help - just try not to let it overwhelm you! Good luck from London England

Hi Amy
I was diagnosed with graves 5 months ago. I had heart palp for 2 months before they actually diagnosed me and my pulse rate was alwsys +130 at rest. I was stressed because I thought I would have a heart attack. The proponol worked but only when i was taking carbimazole. It took about 2 weeks for carbimazole to get into my system and stop palpatations snd my other thytoid problems, aching legs, tiredness, high pulse rate etc.
The only symptom I've got 5 months dodn the line is hair fall and this is making me just as anxious as I was 5 months ago. I don't know why I'm having hair loss now when my thyroid results have been normal for over 2 months.
You will feel better once thyroid med take effect and keep taking anxiety medication because it will help with heart rate and palpa.

Jac ... try not to worry too much about your hair loss ... Although Iknow
how dreadful that it ... I lost all my body hair , eyebrows, eyelashes and clumps of head hair I was distraught ... 3 or 4 months after starting
20mg of Carbimazole daily I started taking Biotin and vitamin and mineral supplements ... and my hair started to grow back in .. everywhere except body hair .. it took I'd say.. 6 ..to 9 months for any small noticeable difference and now, one year later it's almost back to normal ..except body hair.... try a nice short haircut so it won't be so noticeable ..
land Good Luck .,

Hi madge
Did you continue to take carbimazole when you saw how much hair was falling out?
I feel like crying all the tkme at the moment because after going through hell 2 months prior to being diagnosed I thought at least that's it. Then 4 months later hair started to fall out which I'm still struggling to understand. Why didn't my hair fall out when I was at my worst 7 months ago or why if it is the tablets has it taken 4 months to make my hair fall? I'd it is a side effect of medication then surely it would gave happened in the first month of taking them!
Doctors and my specialist don't really care about how I feel they just blame disease.

Hi Amy,
My name is Amy too!
The first thing to do is run out and buy some thiamine, and take 200mg with some orange juice.
If you look up "BeriBeri", you may recognize many of your symptoms there. This is because thyroid conditions cause our bodies to deplete stores of nutrients faster than we can replace them. Thiamine is only one - all our vitamins, minerals and the many enzymes we make from them, get depleted. We basically become malnurished from the thyroid condition, and get every possible symptom you can get from lack of nutrients.
At one point I was having chest pain and my heart was skipping beats every thirty seconds. Thiamine fixed me in half an hour.
