If not glaucoma then what else?

Hi, so I am 19 years old and have experienced a number of visual disturbances over the last few years, the most notable being that I see large halos and rainbow halos around lights at night. Naturally when they started to bother me I googled causes of it, and glaucoma was the overwhelming response. 

I made an appointment with an ophthalmologist, who I have now seen three times over the last six months, each time him telling me my eyes look perfectly healthy and I do not have glaucoma. Given that he is a very well-respected ophthalmologist who specialises in glaucoma I am inclined to believe him. But if not glaucoma then what else could be causing this? He also told me he saw no sign of cataracts (something else he specialises in). I am starting to feel like a crazy person but the halos have gotten worse recently and I just can't believe that this is just a normal phenomenon that my eyes are experiencing. 

To give some context about my eyes I have essentially 20/20 vision (mild long sightedness in my left eye), haven't lost any central or peripheral vision (at least not yet), but I am very light sensitive and see a lot of floaters. 

Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated, thankyou.

    Hi,ive seen halos around lights etc since my late 20s ,im now 59. Could have some dry eye issues,but i never had anything found in relation to my problems when young.

    sometimes eye dryness and mild allergies with mucus on the cornea can cause halos. , try to use eye lubricant drops (for dry eyes if present),and I don't know if you take any drugs or Alcohol, but it is better to avoid any.

    If your dr. suspected glaucoma, he w'ld do more investigations. Don't worry, most of these c/o are self limited and will subside soon. Best wishes.

      I have been on Roaccutane (recently come off it) for years and only just thought to see if it can cause eye side effects - turns out it can increase light sensitivity and cause night vision problems/glare. So I'm hoping this is just a side effect from Roaccutane!

    A number of years ago I had similar symptoms. All straight lines seemed to have a shiny line down the sides and everything I looked at shimmered. I also found that when I was in a well lit room at night and then went into a dark room I'd still see lights for a good while after. I went to the optometrist and had a multitude of tests and it ended up being an allergy to chocolate which I had been over indulging in!! So, think about what you are eating and drinking. Is there anything that is classes as high allergy? It might be chocolate, cheese, wine, tomatoes, dairy, nuts. This may not be what it is but it's food for thought. Good luck!!!

      Hi,

      I do eat a lot of chocolate actually! I would never have even thought to consider if a chocolate allergy was causing this. I'll look into it, thankyou 😊
