We are a retired couple who have been together since our teens. My wife has been plagued with mental and physical ailments all this time and found some stability with Olanzapine some 20 years ago.
An episode of depression recently was prescribed Avanza (mirtazapine) which exhibited severe side effects - joint and muscle pain and also agitation. After a few weeks getting to a full 30mg she was told to reduce to half tab for a week then cease.
After 10 days, pains are now more severe even excruciating and heat/cold and Voltarin rapid becoming ineffective. Pain lasts 5-8 hours and only to reappear a few hours later.

Those side effects of joint pain & agitation are common with Mirt' ~ Mirt' is a very strong sedating AD and not to be prescribed lightly. Some doctors are using it as a sleep aid. If your wife can find other more natural ways to treat her depression like talking therapies, CBT, Mindfulness, yoga, walking she might well do better than taking these meds.
No one can tell you how long those pain symptoms will last, if may wear out quite quickly ~ when you say "a couple of weeks", how many weeks exactly was your wife taking Avanza for?
I would also be looking at Magnesium and Vitamin B at our age, and gettting the thyroid checked by the GP, many people have what they think is depression to find out it is in fact a thyroid problem - GP's don't test this first and I think its important to find out.
How about trying magnesium salts baths for the aches see if it helps? And sugar, Mirt & sugar don't mix, and sometimes too much sugar can trigger joint pain with a history with Mirt.
Hope a little of this may help; wishing you well.

This time she discussed going on mirt again with GP and started as before, 1/2 for 5 days and on to one 30mg. She started getting strong muscle pain, agitation and sedation and after 3 weeks dropped back to 1/2 for a week then 1/4 for one day then stopped. After a few days (3) feeling better she continued back on the 1/2 for 11 days until the acute muscle pains became too much again and stopped (8 sept) - pains sweating and periods of agitation have continued for 10 days now.
She has had full blood tests including thyroid and magnesium. All ok.
