Chronic Pelvic Pain

Hi Hi. This is the first time i'm posting here but trust me i have read almost all threads. So here goes.
Im in my mid twenties and approximately 3 years ago, i started having sharp pains around my left groin area. Overtime the pain has gotten worse and it radiates down my upper thigh. The pain is reallllly bad. Like it wakes me up kindhe pain of bad. I try not to be dependent on pain killers except when i am just like what the hell. I usually just lay down, cramp my leg to put pressure on the side. this relieves the pain a bit. the pain usually lasts for about 15 - 25 mins and im always weak and tired after every episode. then last year i started keeping a pain chart. i noticed the pain comes lets say 5 days before my period and immediately after my period. i do not have painful periods, its like the best time of the month for me. Another time the pain comes is after a clitorial orgasm. it is awwwwful!!!! like the worst! i have done 3 abdominal scans overtime and one hip xray. the 1st scan showed fluid in my uterus and my dr diagonised PID and i got drugs. cant remember the name now. the dr tried to insinuate that it was an std/sti even though my history showed i wasnot sexually active. anyways, the drugs obviously didnt work. changed doctors and went to a gyne specialist. this is were i did the 2nd scan and xray, they both showed nothing. i was internally fine. the doctor suggested nerve damage because of a previous accident and gave me drugs for nerve repair. im still in pain though. did a 3rd scan on my discretion and this one was before my period and showed two cysts on my left ovary. im tired of the hospital. im always tired, feeling like a hypercondriac but im serious pain guys. any ideas, suggestions will be great

Hi DiD
This must be a nightmare for you, and frustrating because you can't get any answers from medical professionals, and yes, it is not all in your head, it is real. You are similar to others who are suffering with pelvic pain disorders.
Go back to your GP and ask for a referal to a physiotherapist. NICE guidelines now states that all pelvic pain should be referred to a womens health Physio - rather than drug intervention being the first line treatment. Ideally you need to know if you have PCOS and what things you can do to manage this painful condition, if the pain is not just from the PCOS then a Physio will be able to help.
As you so rightly suggest, no amount of pain kilers will solve the problem, it has to be tackled at the source of the pain and a Physio will help.
Other things to help are any books/blogs by Amy Stein Heal Pelvic Pain Book and DVD, trigger point massage for pelvic pain. Amy has lots of films on YouTube and this will help you to understand what is happening, because it is complex and an understudied area in mainstream medicine you need to find those who specialise. A UK pelvic pain specialist is Dr Ruth Jones - wonderful, vibrant, passionat practitioner - check out her work.
Please dont live in pain, there are some great specialists out there, you might not get a 1 to 1 with them, but their knowledge is awesome.
Hope this helps

Hi Did,
just read yours and Kegel8Stephanies response - I am male, but have also been suffering with chronic pelvic pain now for 3 years. It was that bad in the beginning that i was getting 'desperate' and was beginning to give up of ever living without chronic and severe pain again. I had cystoscopies and was subscribed all sorts of pain killers etc, everything showed as normal, but that did not help the excrutiating pain.
Finally I was referred to the hospital physio and he was teriffic - he also recommended Amy Steins book - Healing Pelvic Pain.....i started doing the exercises in there and I would say I am 99% pain free now having followed the exercises religiously. Have been for about 6 months now. I know it's the exercises because when i stop them, after a week or so they start to re-emerge.....10 mins exercise a day is a very small price to pay for being pain free :-) Feel like I have got my life back.
The doctors lack of understanding for this condition is astounding especially as it seems that there are so many people that suffer from Chronic pelvic pain. In my experience they simply dont have a clue!
From what I can understand, although there are many reasons why the pain begins, from a water infection, to an STD, to a trauma to the area or even just sitting too long on a cold surface, there is one thing in common with virtually all - your muscles in the area tense when they sense there is an issue until they forget to be able to relax altogether. This tension can then spread to various other ligaments and muscles and even organs, such as pressure being put on your bladder, which can make you feel an urgency to go or difficulty in emptying the bladder and then feeling like you have to go again almost immediately afterwards.
The exercises work at helping you to stretch all the muscles that have become tensed and have shortened as a result, leaving you in pain. Most people get amazing results after doing these excercises for a while. If in doubt, a good physio will help you undertake them.
Did.....PLEASE DO NOT BELIEVE THE DOCTORS WHEN THEY SAY YOU HAVE TO LIVE WITH THIS....I can assure you....YOU DONT :-))))
Kindest regards and hope you feel much better very quickly. Please let us know how you got on.
