I would just be really careful. It's been 4yrs and I still have trouble with a few things like peanuts, noodles, m&m's, some meats etc. Best of luck!

Thank you for your feedback.  Is it the chocolate m&m's you have a problem?  If it is, do you have problems with other forms of chocolate?

Rich chocolates seem to choke me up from time to time. The choc. m&m's pool in the back of my throat making me cough. Even though it's been 4yrs I still have trouble eating and choke on all types of foods. Pasta is one of the worst things for me still. Peanuts and popcorn are a big no-no of course.

Thank you for the additional detail, I'll be carefull when I try the chocolate.  Sorry if this is gross but there are some foods I love but can't eat so I plan to chew and savor, but not swallow.  Kind of like wine tasting.  :- D

You can't say anything that will gross me out so to speak. I still gag and have to stick my finger down my throat sometimes just to get food to go down or throw it back up. I pray your surgery was 100% successful.

At just over a week since surgery food still seems to just sit in my esophagus and doesn't really work down unless I walk/jog, take deep breaths, and sometimes drink thiker fluids.  Hopefully it getts better with more time.  But you brought up somthing I've been wondering.  If I try to advance what I eat too soon and can't get it to go down will I hurt anything by forcing it back up?  I wouldn't think so since they "fixed" the gowing down part and coming back up shouldn't be affected.

I'll be honest with you, my surgery wasn't as successful as we had all hoped it would be. It's been 4yrs and I started having issues 1yr post op. It was like I had never had the surgery at all. I've had several endoscopies to stretch my throat so food will go down because I still throw it up due to it just sticking in my esophagus. Don't get me wrong, I'm better than I was but gagging, choking and adpirating from time to time is not what I was hoping for. I truly hope I can have another HM in the future so I can stop these issues I'm still having. Not sure that throwing up is healthy since achalasia is such a tricky disorder in the first place.

I think the general rule is that it is normally six weeks for surgical scars to heal completely.   Massaging your chest, dropping on to your heels and jumping around might well help and be OK, but you must not overload your oesophagus, even though I know that is easier said than done.   Eat very small quanitities of soft / liquid food, and ask the specialist nurse or the surgeon for advice.

You will probably feel really sensitive about the thought of vomiting, but your system will reject the food one way or another if it needs to.

I'm sorry to hear your surgery didn't go better.  Did you have the fundoplication?  The reason I ask is I've heard there have been issues if the doctor makes that wrap too tight.  In fact, I saw one response where their doctor stopped performing the fundoplication which caused too many problems with food transport and didn't always eliminate acid blockers.  I hope you are able to have another surgery and improve your quality of life.

Thank you.  I am definitely slowing everything down, eating less but more often and go for a walk after every meal.  This all seems to be helping.

Yes I had the HM w/dor fundiplication back in 2012. I do feel it helped SOME but not to the extent I was hoping for. Just last night, I choked on a green bean and ended up throwing up what I had eaten and had a nose bleed in the process. Some days are better than others and I may go a whole week and never have an issue. Then, I may have a week where I choke or have trouble swallowing daily. I know this disorder is different for everyone and it's quite frustrating. I'm going back to soft, liquid type foods for a week or so and give my throat a rest.

You may always have to watch the texture of some foods with hard skins like beans, tomatoes and so on.

I'm sorry you had the issue with the green bean, but it is intersting you got a bloody nose.  When I had stuff comming up I kept getting bloody nose too, but thought it was just me.  I think you have a good plan and wish you the best of luck.

    Try Eggs Benedict?

?There are various lists in 'A Patients Guide to Achalasia' that you can download from the website of the oesophageal patients association under the oesophagus and then Achalasia (towards bottom of page) but theseare usualy problem foods.  But the principle would be to take it easy, and do not try the second mouthful until the first one has passed through below your diaphragm.

Thank you.  I saw another post where you mentioned that site and I downloaded everything I could find.  It is packed with great information.
