MGD and Blepharitis

Wondering if anyone has had similar experience. Diagnosed with MGD and Blepharitis almost 2 months ago have taken Doxycycline, steroids, antibiotic/steroid drops, eye compress, lid bathing and artificial tears. Then was given Tobradex and after night 6 I developed a burn/ abrasion under one eye where the ointment laid while I slept. Has anyone else had this happen? I'm getting very little relief, my eyelashes are all falling out and I've lost 90% of my vision in left eye. Live in a small town the ophthalmologist told me to get new glasses made with a new prescription but I did that less than 3 weeks before I developed this problem! I'm freaking out and am very stressed. I live alone and am having difficulty driving😔 Please help!!!

Hi,wow youve tryed alot in 3 months. I was made to do just warm comptesses, fish oil and lid cleaning first 3 months..all the rest is in my future im sure. Have you ben checked for demodex mites? Alot of doc dont have a high enough powered microscope to do so. Mine recomeneded trying Cleridex wipes, you can buy them on amazon,i still havnt tryed them, but maybe the mites are causing the problem. I can relate, have mgd/bleph also,it causes much anxiety,i have some better days, but then the bad ones are back. Xx

Hi thank you for your post. My left eye I couldn't read the second line on the eye chart with my glasses on and couldn't read anything with them off. I'm concerned one of the many drops they gave me caused it because I got that burn under my eye from the Tobradex?

Hi! I have the same diagnosis.  I was prescribed Maxitrol drops which contains cortizone. This gets it under control quickly. However as it's cortizone one can;t take it forever.  The problem comes when coming off the drops to keep it under control. I tried various combinations and  cleaning methods and in the beginning felt I had scrubbed my hair, face, eyes and lids to pieces.  I think I now have the combination that's working for me and the right balance.  I mix about 60ml warm water, a squirt or two of baby Johnsons shampoo and 2 - 3 drops Tea tree oil and with a face cloth (different one for each eye) wash eyebrows, lids. I use Tea tree oil facial wipes and because this is a little drying I take a small amount of Coconut oil and use it on my face.  That's maravellous for the skin.

My sight is also deteriorating. However my opthalmologist who has an excellent name in the field, said Belph does not affect the eyesight and that my deteriorating eyesight is a different issue which we are at present looking into. When my eyes were streaming and filming up it of course affected the sight but that has cleared up on the Maxitrol and I am struggling with my sight. I go to see him in 2 weeks time and will keep you updated.

Going on what my opthalmologist said I would say that your loss of eyesight is not Bleph related.

I would go back to your opthalmologist or is a second opinion possible?

Thank you so much for your response. I haven't been using anything on my face because I didn't think I should. No lotions or makeup at all. I will continue on my journey and thank you for your thoughts!!

This is a distressing thing to have and it seems each person has to work out what''s best for them. I have also stopped using all makeup which I really miss! The coconut oil has bacteria fighting properties so I'm happy to use this. I think eating well and getting proper rest helps with the anxiety and general well being. I also think it is important to get into a positive attitude. Keep at it and hope to hear you're doing better soon!

I have had a very similar circumstance over 2 years.  I am currently taking Doxy daily, doing all of the above in terms of cleaning/care.  I finally turned to a specialist at Mass Eye in Boston, who agreed that I am doing well with "maintaining" but agrees there is an underlying cause.  I have had a long history of allergies and as I age (ugh!  60!) I seem to have developed more sensitivies.  They may be triggers but nonetheless, I follow her lead. I am now getting tested to see if there are dietary or environmental triggers.  I plug on with the hygiene, and wait to see!

    Hi there

Im so sorry to hear of all youre goin through. I think another visit to the Ophtamologist is needed. At times my eyes may get slightly watery with the Bleph and since I developed it along with chronic dry eye I see halos and starbursts around lights. Thank God, my vision isent affected. Re the Bleph and MGD I think main thing is to get to the root cause as there are many treatments and unless you know the root cause you could be using the wrong treatment. I was on Doxy for two months and it had no impact and I was wrecked from it, 250mg a day. I bought cliradex from amazon as Cliradex dont deliver within Europe. Im finding it good and thankfully I have an apt tomorrow to finally test for Demodex. I cannot wait. My own gut feeling has told me all along its demodex and I can trace back to how it happend....(a compromised immune system)......Can you get something for for the anxiety, I think most of us who have this suffer with anxiety but you have the added pressure of your vision being affected. Was there any particular incident that you think triggered your bleph/mgd.

Thank you for your reply. I had not slept in days because of stress from other health issues. I noticed my eyes hurt but I ignored it and within a day I couldn't open my eyes at all. They were infected and I then got the diagnosis. I will keep trying and look for another ophthalmologist. Thanks again!

i use flaxseed oil,(one captsul), 3 fish oil, 3 oil of oreagno capsuls. Then with my eyes closed I use no tears baby shampoo<9 about the size of a dime) and ONE drop of Teatree oil. I wash my face with and with my eyes closed I scrub gentlu along the edges of my eye lids and then rinse my whole face with cool water. I use systane eye drops,(no preservatis) but since I started this method, I don't haveft to use the drops very much. The bleph is probably not causing the problem with your eyesight, it may be something you have used. Please be careful what you use in your eyes, the doctor sais that what I am doing is excellent, and that my eyes look good. Tea tree oil is good mixed with no tears babyshampoo, but never use it by it'self. It is very strong, and only one drop should be enough. It''s also goog to mositurise your face afterwards. with a gentle lotion. I wish yo well. smile Dena

Actually blurred vision is a symptom of mgd and bleph and is listed on many site. When your tear film is affected your vision often blurs.

Chic 6392 I can relate to everything you have written.  I have had it all and used all the same meds that you have.  It is a pain.  It's constant.  It has just ruined my life in so many ways.  One thing I have that you didn't mention is a tearing of my eyes.  Can't stop that.  I have had stents put in and tear duct surgery to no avail.  I ran across something, though, not long ago.  I can't take advantage of it though because for some reason they said I wasn't a candidate.  I think my age.  I would like to send you the website but I tried to do that to someone else and they took it off and said I couldn't send websites to people.  I don't know why this is because I thought we were all here to help each other.  It is a very promising treatment and I would love for you to see it.  Does this forum have a private messenger so I could send this to you?  Let me know and I will sure send it.  I could even email it to you if I had your address.  Good luck on your problems.  You are not alone.  Margaret
