Gastric bypass/ sleeve

I am seeing a consultant about a gastric operation and he suggested a gastric bypass. I'm thinking maybe a sleeve wouldn't be quite so severe but would love to hear from anyone that's had either one done and your experiences of it. Thanks in advance

    Hi Louise

I had a bypass at the end of April.  I've lost 4-5 stone, around 30kg.

It's funny how we perceive something isn't it, I wanted the bypass because in my mind the sleeve was the more drastic, only because with the sleeve they remove your stomach, with the bypass it's actually still there, even if it is just an empty sack.  In my mind that meant that if it needed to be reversed it could ... but that's just me.

All that said, my procedure has been so fantastic.  I was so well that I went home the following day, and I've had no major issues, no infections, nothing.  Pain was minimal, I had to make real efforts not to overdo things while I healed.

I do think that by having a bypass, leaves a small pouch which means (again possibly just in my mind), that I can sit and have a small meal, I wonder whether having a sleeve would leave me struggling to consume enough at one meal to be able to work.

I am happy that I had the bypass, if suits my way of life and mentality.

Get lots of information, remember people usually give you either the wonderful stories or the terrible ones, you don't often see middle of the road stories on  forums.

Good luck Louise, I'm sure that you will make the right choice for you

Hi Katie, thanks for answering and it sounds like it's working for you brilliantly. The only reason I'm thinking of a sleeve is that a bypass is permanent and can't be reversed, from what I believe. I gotta say I'm very nervous but feel this is my only chance to change my life and get healthier. Can I ask how long the procedure took and what size meal are u able to eat now?

      To Louise

My understanding is that with the sleeve they take the stomach out. . Check with the surgeon.

You are right to be nervous, let's face it, you be stupid not to be. It will change your life, including how you socialise. ... look into whether there is a support group near you, you get to talk to people who have been through it.

Now I eat a child's meal... maybe a bit less.. but I do feel like I'm thinking and planning good all day every day. Making sure that I have something with me just in case I get caught out ... making sure the protein and iron is sufficient, getting enough fluids. It's not easy, but look on it as a total shift and it's fine.

I don't know how long it took... I took a long time to wake up properly, but my surgeon had at least 4 booked in that day, so can't have been too long.

      Good luck x

The sleeve is not as drastic as bypass. They do remove a section of the stomach but they basically shape your stomache like a banana. My husband had it done in 2009. He lost 95 pounds and have kept off 75 of those lost for 7 years. Good luck!

Thank you. Did your hubby have any problems with it or was it pretty straight forward for him. I've got a lot of weight to lose but don't want to be thin, just a healthier weight where I won't struggle as much. Also can I ask about excess skin after the loss?

I do have excess skin and lots of it! I'm seeing a plastic surgeon on Thursday to get a date for my full tummy tuck don't have a lot on my legs as my job is quite physical. Once I've had the tum tuck will start swimming as this is meant to be good.

Any of the surgeries are going to be hard work but we'll worth it. You will have a milk and yoghurt diet 2 weeks before surgery make sure u do stick to it as it really does help shrink the liver before surgery!

I Also brought baby meal pots anliquidised meals for after surgery but u will be on quite a restricted diet fluids only for quite a few weeks after surgery. Like I said before it's a tool to help lose weight not a miracle diet!!

Good luck and please let me no how you go.

Hi Louise, iI had a gastric sleeve on nov 3 last year was due to have a bypass but when the surgeon started I couldnt have this done as not enough bowel apparently! ! Must say the sleeve has been an amazing tool to helping me lose weight to date ive lost over 30 kilos in weight. I've found what I eat now totally different to before. The only down side is ii can only eat very very small amounts now. Have learnt over the year that weight watchers bread is perfect and if your going out for a meal have a starter as your main course!!!!

Good luck with the surgery and it is hard going but we'll worth it also I was type 2 diabetics that's now been reversed

Sally that is fantastic!!! Bet you feel amazing for it. I've got an appointment with the psychologist on Thursday, so fingers crossed it goes ok. I'm also gonna ask for the sleeve as they recommended the full bypass, but that does scare me a bit. Lol. Good luck for the future but I've no doubt you're gonna be enjoying it....you deserve too xxx

Hi Louise, I too am at the start of my journey and am waiting to be referred to Luton & Dunstable hospital NHS. It seems that the sleeve might be a better option for me but obviously not certain until I see them.

I wondered if anyone here went privately funded at all and what are the pros and cons of this? Many thanks
