surgeons are hesitating on replaceing my hip which is medically necessary they aren't sure if i'm a good candidate because of my drug abuse from many years ago, i'v been clean for many years until my primary care doctor gave me percocet 5mg twice daily which is totally necessasary for me to even limp around a few hours a day, because of my prescribed medication they are saying i'm back abusing drugs and i'm not worth the effort for a THR i'm ready to talk to a lawyer about how i feel they are discrimanating against me for my past, has anyone run into problems getting a THR approved because the doctor's hold your past lifestyle against you, the last time i used narcotics illeagally was over 25 years ago at which time i went into a methadone clinic which i left 3 years ago and was doing well until this hip pain got so bad i couldn't even walk anymore after many falls that landed me in the emergency room they refered me to a primary doctor that would give me the necessary pain meds to stop me from falling, the sharp pain in my hip would cause my leg to buckle and cause a fall so i'm afraid if i stop the percocet i may have a very bad fall that i may not recover from

You deserve a new hip no matter what, period. THR will get you off pain meds . Call a hospital advocate file a complaint.
I am sorry that you have to justify your need for a better quality of life by a hip prothesis only to find that the medical industry is failing your medical needs.
heck 5 mg of Percocet barely helps my pain I'm waiting for a revision. In a wheel chair cannot get pain meds at all it's so annoying. I have no history of abusing any pain meds had three THR .
It's gotton so ridiculous for those of us who need pain meds cannot get them. Living with chronic pain is a nightmare.
I hope ole you fight for what you need don't give up keep pushing even if you need a lawyer.
peace and best wishes.

Paul l think you should make a complaint or get a lawyer as this is definatly not right. The past is yhe past and in my country people get liver transpants who have been addicted to drink is this not the same thing your past should not come into it as you got clean and as you said it was over 25 years ago. You should never be punished or not treated for a genuine illness that has nothing to do with what was going on in your life 25 years ago they would never do that in the uk. Even is ot was 2 years ago. What the should be doing is giving you a hip replacement the neccisary pain meds and monitoring you incase you become addicted to them. They should then put you on a programme to tapper you of the pain meds when the time is right and move you to an non addictive pain killer. Wither you were an addict or not l have had 2 hip replacements and a knee replacement in the 1 year and have been on addictive pain meds the full time so l know at the moment l will probably be slightly addicted to them as at one point l was on tramadol, co-codamol and Oxy all addictive pain killlers so l am just at much a risk at getting addicted than anyone. I have now tappered myself tramadol and have cut down on co-codamol but still need them and the oxy as l have still to get 1 knee replaced. This is where they should be monitoring you after the hip replacement to control your pain meds to make sure you don'tbecome addicted to them and if so step in and work on a plan to tapper you off them. I know all to well the pain your in with your hips as l suffered a year of shooting pains up my leg and crying just trying to get dressed in the morning. I am shocked they have told you that because of something in your past. After all an addiction is an illness as well and you beat it. Why would they give you perocet in the 1st place if you did not need it.
What they do over her is give you a script for a months worth of pain medication and will not give you any more until you are due the next script and then might ask to see you before giving out more judt incase they think its time you shoud be cutting down..
They can't disscriminate you no matter what happened in your psst this is wrong and l would definatly fight yoùr case. Perhaps show them you can take something non addictive for pain untill you get the thr. Even then you really should not need to prove that. If you need a new hip you should get it no quesions asked.
Good luck

I am not sure what to tell you - I agree with previous comments -
Can you get 2nd or 3rd opinion ... just asking -
don't see how an previous addiction should get you banned from THR ...
do or did you have a casemanager or social worker ?
where do you live?
please let us know how you are getting on, okay?
big warm hug
renee
