Hi, yes it can show up on a scan, that's how mine was diagnosed alongside blood tests, my scan showed a very small right kidney with some scaring, What sort of scan did you have. Mine was originally found with ultrasound, then further with another scan. What do you mean by low kidney function, did he give you figures? Egfr for instance.

She didn't give me the exact numbers just said low functioning to do with the filteration the scan showed up urine retention so I'm not passing all my urine in one go I suffer from many urine infections and also blood in the urine since I was young, I had a operation last year and on my discharge notes under other health conditions it said CKD stage 5 I pointed it out to the Dr she said it was typing error I'm so confused anyway she has referred me too a specialist hope I get some answers

    Hi,

It is not always to diagnose the kidney issue through a scan, when the doctors are not able to do this they may offer a biopsy this is the best way to find a cause as a small amount of the actual kidney tissue is removed and sent off to be examined by specialists in that field.  Stage 3 has two parts 3a and 3b.  A lot of people stay at stage 3 and never progress, so I think you need to find out the cause.
