Hi, you have had major abdominal surgery. Be kind to yourself. Ignore your work. Your note will say 6weeks but you may not be well enough to return then. You must be guided by your doctor or consultant. It was well over a year before I was without any pain at all. Not constant just twinges.

Everyone is different. Work should not be hassling you. They can get in trouble for that in UK.

    Hi loulou,

Im 11 weeks since total abdo hyst...

I have 1 week left on my note and admittedly i am still having tummy pain and awful pins and needles in right thigh which they think is nerve damage.

I am having trouble sleeping with the pain.

I am going to go the gps next week for advice and to see if they think im ready to return to work but if i do i will only do so on a phased return, i know i wont be able to go straight bk on full time i dont feel able to, im a nurse.( the gynae specialist did say when i did go bk to go bk slowly)

Everybody is different and i have struggled with menapause aswell.

Dr wasnt happy to give me hrt due to family history but did so reluctantly but i then decided i didnt want to take it, so its took me a couple of weeks to find an alternative..

    Hi, Loulou,

Sorry to learn you're going through this.  Please speak to your doctor as soon as you can to get your leave extended.  You have had major surgery, and the layers of sutures need to help your internal structure and tissues bind together and heal.  In times past you wouuld have been treated by staying a week or more in hospital, not to mention strict confinement at home.

Currently, the thinking is that it's best to be carefully active as soon as one can be, but that doesn't mean sufficient time shouldn't be allowed for you to heal, especially if you do the type of work that you do.  Everyone heals at different rates, and it's still early days for you, especially if you're in such acute discomfort.

Best of luck to you, and let us know how you get on! xx

      Hi Loulou,

I understand that the weight gain is a concern.  I'm also gaining weight, but that's because I'm eating too much! (lol) smile. However, you are having physical problems that affect your ability to exercise and rest properly! Studies have shown that if you're having problems sleeping then you will gain weight. I'm also having problems sleeping, some of which I attribute to adrenaline.

Another poster on this site informed me that when your body senses that you don't have sufficient estrogen it compensates by releasing more adrenalline, which affects your abiity to sleep.

If you can do some very slow walking; sort of like strolling around without any goal, that might help.  Avoid fat, sugar and high fructose corn syrup if you can. Don't use artificial sweeteners, as they mess up your gut flora and only make you hungrier!

I think that you'll get better, gradually, though the changes might seem small at the time....I didn't feel well, and then suddenly, I started to be able to be more active.

Let me know how you get on! xx

Hi Loulou,i had the same op as you and i had 19 weeks off in total,i certainly wasnt ready to go back to work after the reccommended 12 week recovery.I work as a nurse so lots of long shifts and pushing/pulling etc.I went back on a phased return when i was ready. As i had my ovaries removed too it pushed me into menopause so i suffered with those symptoms too.Dont rush back, its a big op to have had done, dont let your work bully you going back too soon, listen to your body.Good luck babe xx
