Claiming JSA and working under 16 hours

Okay so I have a choice to work for a company throughout the Christmas period which is under 16 hours, but I heard that the exact amount of money that you make from the job will be deducted from your Job Seekers Allowance. If that's the case then wouldn't I be making the same money just staying on the Job Centre and not working, rendering it completely pointless in working?

Depends how you look at it, I personally would sooner be working and maybe socialising than sitting at home all day, don't you get expenses?? Like travel etc

Another in agreement.  It could be a stepping stone to another better paid job with more hours.  It's an opportunity to gain a reference and recent work for your next job application which will be looked on favourably by an employer.  What if a job came up with this company in the new year?  You'd immediately stand out because they would know how you worked during the Christmas period.

I agree with the others,   it would be useful experience if nothing else.  Make sure though that you aren't worse off if you have to pay travel costs as well.  You might not be able to afford to then..  x

I agree with the other comments which are all very good advice but I also understand what the OP is saying about not taking a job when it does-not make you financially better off.

Lucas could work physically hard work for 10 hours per week @ the National Minimum Wage and not receive a penny more than he would if he was in receipt of JSA.

I know there is a good argument that taking the job might lead to something, but in all honesty seasonal Christmas work rarely does. He could spend that 10 hours looking for a better paid job or one which was more than 16 hours per week where (age dependent) he might qualify for Working Tax Credits.
