Revision surgery

I had total hip replacement of both left and right hips in the past six years. My right hip has been fine but my left hip has never been right it was done 3 years ago. I went back to my surgeon multiple times to tell him something was wrong but he kept telling me everything looks fine. Then he told me last fall all my pain was due to my back. So I went to a back surgeon and had to have back surgery last December. I didn't make progress and my back surgeon could find nothing wrong with my back after surgery. He was very caring and did every test in the book as opposed to my hip surgeon who did no test accept a x-ray. Back dock suggested a second opinion for my hip the second opinion doctor immediately saw the cup had to come loose and was at a place I had to have revision surgery the traditional way and have a 12 plus incision that refuses to heal and still seeps after a month. I am still in a lot of pain and recently begin swelling and both legs and lower abdomen they ran all kinds of tests but cannot come up with the reason for the swelling. In the meantime my surgeon suggest I go to a wound care specialist. I am waiting for the appointment and will likely get a wound vac. Do you think I have a lawsuit against the first hip doctor Who refused 2 believe anything what's wrong and I went for 3 years in pain and lost my career that I loved and now sits and do nothing and I'm depressed. I am not used to not being busy but I can't do much without pain and swelling. Just wondered what everyone's opinion was

I'm really sorry that you have had to endure three years of pain and trauma, I suppose first questions would be did your original surgeon do xray/MRI and other tests to eliminate any problems? Doesn't sound like he did but I don't know.

Did your back surgeon say that you could have got away without surgery on your back or that it was really nescassary? And are you having Physio as the reason you are having a problem with swelling could be a lack of movement, no offense meant by saying that but when I was unable to move much I suffered with lots of swelling which has more or less gone unless because sit for too long.

Hello. I've had both of my hips replaced one in 2010 and the other in 2011. I've had similar problems in that I have pain in my thighs and groin area. My surgeon told me the same thing, that the pain was coming from my lumbar stenosis. So I've lived all these years in pain. I've often wondered if I could sue my surgeon but decided not to. I'm sorry you are having so many problems with your revision surgery and hope you feel better soon.

    Hi Mrs D

Firstly, do you have written proof of all these visits?  Secondly, are there 3rd party persons who can back u up at each of these visits?  You cannot depend on the NHS from your GP to the Hospital playing fair with you.

Thirdly, if you feel u have a case, do you have big pockets or at least £1000 because even no win no fee Solicitors will charge fees upfront and fourthly, and most importantly, do you have the stamina to go ahead with this?

Some NHS cases have taken up to 10 years to get to a final Hearing and the wear and tear on your state of mind cannot be underestimated.  Only sheer bloody mindedness and anger will get u through, and sometimes, you will have days when even your Solicitors will be lumped with the enemy.

Or you can get on with your life, tell us all who is this sharing caring Surgeon and just report him to the Medical C ouncil to give him some grief!

    Hi Mrs D,

I'm guessing from the way you write that you are from the US?

I practice Criminal law within the UK. Medical negligence is extremely hard, on the balance of probability, to prove; the Doctors, as a rule, unite.

Just reading briefly. An X Ray was taken by your hip surgeon that, at that time, supposedly, revealed no abnormality? Were you referred by the hip doc to the back doc? What surgery did you receive to your back?

If the initial X Ray revealed no abnormality then it could be suggested that the back surgery caused the cup to mis align.

In the U.K. Household content policies offer legal cover which includes medical negligence. Clearly I'm unaware if this also applies in the US but it would be worth taking a look.

In my mind everything is dependent upon the initial X Ray after which you were advised all was in place.

I'm so very sorry that you have endured and are still suffering with so much pain . I really wish that I could help. In the meantime, my thoughts are with you.

    Love Maureen
