Kyphosis help please

Hi guys I'm 21 years old and have had around 60-65 degree kyphosis have been to many physio's and nothing seems to work I'm in so much pain all the time I have a big pain threshold and even the specialist said I don't need surgery and should be fine ? It's been 6 years and I can't sit down sleep on my back or do anything it has been a trigger to my depression. Why does mine hurt so much compared to others ? I did pull a muscle doing a deadlift years ago and I have found it's gotten worse since then but I guess what I'm asking is, should I push for surgery ? Is there any other options... I want a career in fitness eventually and I obviously can't be helping others while I'm the one who needs help. Thanks

Thanks for that ! Allthough I thought kyphosis and scheurmans disease was the same thing ? And I do have mild scoliosis. Have you got it or somthing simmilar ? What's your advice ? I'm really considering surgery due to it not getting better and just making life a lot harder

yes, another name...I used the generic term...my neice has it, choosing to live with things as they are...a fellow worker choosevthe surgery and is very happy with the results.

I would seek out the most highly esteemed orthopedic surgeons I could travel to...think university with a medical school with an associated hospital-clinic.

They will takes lots of film and perform measurements and take angles. Then they will have a chat with you about what they can offer you.

Keep a diary in anticipation of this meeting...Date, activity, how your condition adversely effects that activity, how you want to perform that activity. Example: Dec 12 helping friend move...great difficulty lifting 30 ish pound boxes, especially painful lower back...low back pain for the next 4 days...took Motrin and acetaminophen...tried heating pad...tried frozen gel pack

    What country are you?

That's a great idea, I was mainly confused on how people can have more of a degree in there spine and be pain free, how bad is your nieces ? I'm from Sydney Australia could you recommend any from here ?

Sydney...you bet, I will track some options for you

My neice choose to not go to college because sitting causes her such pain...she waitresses because she finds being on her feet more comfortable.

And one more thing...most people greatly admire the commitment and success of differently able people....just a thought...

That would be most aprrceiated, I feel for your niece I can't hold a steady job myself I'm a plumber. I think you've got the wrong idea of what I said I do admire people's success and there overall wellbeing I'm just confused how specialist can tell me I should be okay with no pain when that's not the case it makes me think I should " get over it " because people have it much worse but at the end of the day I feel what I feel and it's extremely bad. Would love for you to give me some surgeons for this particular spine deformailty. Thanks for helping me x

    Hi David,

I was crippled with pain from my lower back curvature, and practicing Bikram Yoga was a complete miracle cure for me. The heat and humidity relax the muscles and tendons, allowing for deeper stretching, and all of the poses focus on increasing strength and flexibility in the spine. I can't recommend it highly enough, I hope you have a Bikram studio in your area. If not, since you are a fitness guy, you might research ways to do the poses in a 105 degree sauna (?)

Forgot to mention, I had my upper curvature surgically corrected as a child, and that was helpful to me. But when faced with another operation to correct the lower curve (which, according to my dr. was the only option) or practicing Bikram Yoga, the yoga is a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned. The surgery is much better than doing nothing, but definitely not fun!

Hi David, my son is only 14 - his curve went from 55 to 65 during age 12-13. At 55 no pain but at 65 was getting considerable pain. We're in Canada. With young people here they use a milwauke brace (you'll be too old now to brace) to stop progression of the Kyphosis but it doesn't correct curve already there.  He'll finish with the brace when he's completed his growth cycle (approx. 1 more year). My research found "Schroth Therapy" which is similar to physio but specifically invented for and designed to work for Scholiosis and Kyphosis patients. Was developed in Germany and very successful results there. I had a hard time finding a therapist here in Canada but finally got one (she's great) and have seen improvement already in the 4 months we've been doing the excercises. See if you can find someone in your area can teach you Schroth - the targeted approach builds the right muscles in the right place for your curve so you become your own human brace. Good luck!

and I should add that in brace he's at 45 degrees and a full inch instantly taller. Our hope is once the brace is done the Schroth will hold him at 45.

He has to do the excercises every day appox 30 min. and they have to be done exactly right - lots of emphasis on breathing.

Hi Catherine, am a little confused has the brace helped with your son. My daughter is the same age and has just gone into a brace with similar curves. But I am concerned that we have left the brace to late due to her age.

      We want to avoid surgery!

Hi Kate - the brace definately helped - it immediately stopped the progression of the curve as well as relieved pain he was having. I have read different opinions about whether the Scheureman's continues to progress once growth is complete. Textbooks the doctors read say it stops once growth complete but many real life people on these forums who are in their 20's, 30's or older say it continues to progress. We plan to stay in the brace for another year or so anyway and will likely continue to use it overnight for another couple years after that as extra insurance.

The Schroth exercises are the best thing you can do immediately to help stop progression, relieve pain and possibly even gain some correction if her spine hasn't hardened off yet. Regular physio is not the same - not targeted enough to the specific curve and can be painful and possiblly harmful if not done properly. They have great success with Schroth programs for adults as well as young people. Please check out Schroth exercises for scoliosis and kyphosis - our Edmonton clinic has a facebook page with good info. We are very lucky to have Sanja here in town who operates "Curvy Spine" - she's awesome. They can teach your daughter to manage and control this herself so she can look forward to a fully active pain free life.

After just over a year in the brace we have real results. The brace stopped progression but the schroth has actually improved (corrected) the curve.

We were 63 degrees pre-brace and in 3 x-rays in brace over the year (1/3/6 month marks) showed 45-49 IN brace. Just had our 1 year OUT of brace x-ray (off for 16 hrs prior) and he measures at 43 degrees. According to the doctors (surgeons) that's not possible with brace alone.

The best the brace is supposed to be able to do is hold his original 63 from progressing. He's been doing Schroth for 6 months now - it immediately helped with any remaining pain and has made him strong enough to force his curve back and hold it there without the brace. He has to work at this 30-40 mins per day but it works.

xrays below are both OUT of brace - the one on the L. is just over a year ago at 63 degrees pre-brace. The pic on the R. is couple weeks ago now holding his own without brace at 43 degrees. You can see the "S" shape flattening out. Schroth works!!
