Maxillary Sinus Problem

I have had a problem with this sinus for most of my life.  My cheek on the left side of my face is congested.  I have been trying to clear it for the last month using oil and applying pressure in "bands"after massaging the sinuses in my nose and above my eyes and then moving to the top of the cheeks, both sides and gradualy moving further down each cheek toward the ear.  Then I massage the ear, and pull the left ear gently to the left.  At first their was a certain amount of pain, but that cleared.  I move down to my neck and starting at the bottom of the ear, I move my fingers down toward my collar bone.  Both sinuses in my nose are now clear and I am able to breathe through each, holding one nostril, whilst I breathe through the other.

I think the congestion is less obvious, but that may be my imagination!  I look at my face every day, so it is difficult for me to gauge whether or not there is a change for the better.

?I am hoping that the Forum may be able to give me some further advice or suggestions, as the congestion is quite disfiguring.  Trying to avoid surgery, and hope that what I am doing is correct.  I am following a remedy that I found on another website.

It's a bit hard to give advice if you don't know the cause of the problem

Have you seen a specialist? Do you know what's causing it?

have you ever had an allergy test done?

massaging certainly wouldn't hurt and there are some other natural ways to help clearing your sinuses:

saline rinse or spray, use it regularly and you might notice some improvement.

change diet, cut dairy, and see if it makes any difference.

depending if you have allergies you'll need to avoid any triggers

keep your house free of dust

Many thanks for your help.  As I have stated in the post, this is a life long problem and the nearest I can get too causation would be at a time when I was a stroppy teenager and my #father who was a very pwerful man, boxed my ears, and the left side of my head, crashed into the piano.  It is possible that some damage was caused.  I was not taken to a doctor, and the congestion was not noticeable until I started to get older and gravity started to make itself known.  I have seen an ENT consultant, neither here nor in the US.  GP in the UK only give you 10 minutes, and this is relatively minor compared to my arthritis, for example.  I am able to breathe properly through the affected nostril, so what I have been doing has paid off, but I would like to disperse the congestion.

Forgot to mention that I have no allergies;  If I had an allergy, I would expect it show on both sides of my face, not just the one side. Having said that, my right side is ore senitive than my right.  I do not believe this is due to diet.  I eat sensibly, anyway.  Do not eat red meat, very llittle dairy, mostly leafy vegetables and as many salads as possible, even during the winter months.  A lot of fish and seafod. I do not think that this is an allergy problem, it probably is the result of what I have described in my initial response.

It might be helpful if you could let us know some additional background:

    1) what did your doctor advise

    2) what were the results of your ENT visit

Please see my response to care4health.  Many thanks for your interest.  Did not have an ENT test, and my GP has been concerned more with my hip replacement.  Cannot cover much in only a ten minute appointment, I'm afraid!  I am doing my best with my own research, but am not sure whether I have reduced the congestion.  I am breathing properly through that nostril, so some positive results, there.

Glad to hear you are better. ENTs are primarily surgeons but you might get lucky and get a good one so I would reco you try to get a referral. Consider using an irrigation method such as a netipot. If you are thinking it is structural due to mentioned injury even your GP (in two minutes) can reco a CT scan which may show abnormalities on the one side.

      Good luck.

Many thanks for your suggestion.  My friend was married to an ENT surgeon.  I should have had him take a look, but it wasn't a priority at that time.  I think it may very well be structural, as I don't see how such an impact could not have done at least, some damage.  I may have to live with it for a while, as due to time restrictions with the GP - ten minutes, at best, there is barely sufficient time to discuss an impending second hip replacement, and she is booking weeks ahead.  I will take a look at the netipot option.   I am also using accupressure.  The congestion does not cause discomfort, now that I have cleared the nasal passage; it just doesn't look good, having a slight pouch around the cheek on that side of my face!  I will see if I can make an appointment for her to take a look at it, but the GPs look on these sorts of things as of lesser importance, and don;t really want to be bothered.  Sad, but true.

the only way to find out if there is any structural problem is to see an ENT. GPs are not able to tell. ENT will request a CT. Easy and quick

      Many thanks.

However, as discussed above, the referral will need to come through my GP.  As I have already discussed, there are other issues at hand, at present a probable second hip replacement.  I believe I have located the source of the problem and it does appear to be structural.  I have managed to drain the maxillary somewhat, but it is proving to be a lengthy process.  My ENT friend is in the Bay Area, and I am in the UK.  Will try to obtain yet another appointment with the GP to discuss this.
