UTI Not Going Away After 2 Rounds of Antibiotics

So on Dec. 1 I went to urgent care w/ UTI symptoms, they did a culture and I had an UTI from e coli. They put me on 7 days of antibiotics. Exactly 2 weeks later I started feeling mostly just an urgency to go, went to urgen care (on the weekend) and they tested it. Sure enough, UTI. The dr. put me on 5 days of Cipro and that I needed to follow up with my dr. On the 5th day, saw my dr. and they tested me. Nitrites was negative, but leukolytes were positive. She added another 5 days of Cipro. On the last few days of my cipro, I tested it on over-the-counter UTI test strips. They were negative for both, however after 24 hours off antibiotics, sure enough I tested positive for leukolytes and a few bacteria at the dr. office. They didn't prescribe me anymore antibiotics until they culture it, which will take about 2 days. Has this happened, where as soon as you go off the antibiotics it starts coming back? How can you get rid of it?

Absolutely. Simply needs you need something other than Cipro (which isn't a good antibiotic due to side effects). The culture will tell your doctor which antibiotic your particular infection is sensitive to.

This is happening to me right now, but I'm in a lot worse shape than you. I've been dealing with consistent UTI's for 3 months (seriously!) One to two days off the antibiotic, and it's back again confirmed by culture. Sensitivity tests show the antibiotics that are supposed to work, but on me they do not. The only one I haven't tried yet is Cipro. Two doctors tried to get me to take Cipro stating that it is the one antibiotic that would do the trick. Apparently it didn't for you. Have you read the FDI warnings on Cipro? This is a dangerous antibiotic.

I only read the side affects after taking the Cipro. I haven't had any issues after taking it for 10 days. Luckily. I was given Cipro the last time I had a UTI (about 5 months ago) and it worked with no problems that time. This time, however I haven't been so lucky.

You are right that Cipro is one of the last choice for UTI.....but what would you recommend to people who are allergic to penicillin and celphelaxin and sulpha antibiotics? I can't take any of those until I get desensitized. Macrobid is just as dangerous as cipro and causes wicked side effects. So to the ones that say cipro is dangerous, it does not help matters to ones who can not just take any antibiotic. I have been working very hard to try and eliminate uti naturally for this reason, mine comes and goes too without antibiotics.

Not my thread but I agree. I was given Cipro once when I went to the ER with severe UTI symptoms. Didn't work for me *at all* and when I googled it (on the advice of a poster to this forum), it scared me badly.

Did you find something that eventually worked? Right now I'm waiting for a few days for the culture to come back. I don't know what antibiotic they will try this time.

Felt I had to reply to this one. There are a growing number of us with constant recurring e-coli UTIs. The antibiotics are losing their effectiveness and, more and more people (me included) are becoming allergic to the appropriate antibiotics. I have had Cipro in the past but would never take it again unless it was the drug of last resort to keep me alive. I have PMR and wonder if Cipro was a contributory factor to my developing it, having read the masses of warnings on Cipro on the net. So, normally for e-coli, two of the antibiotics that it is sensitive to, are Cefalexin and Nitofurantoin. Cefalexin is the only one I can take. However, the traditional dosage is not enough to completely kill off the infection in the body. I have been told that small colonies of the bacteria can survive and will recolonise once the antibiotics have gone from the body. A friend with the same problem did find a specialist who put her on long term, high doses of Cefalexin and it was successful. In my case I have had urethral dilation performed (day patient in hospital) and it has greatly decreased the number of infections I have had. I believe the stats say that it is highly successful for 70% of women who have it performed. I am afraid I disagree with Linda about D-mannose - it is expensive and it doesn't work. Perhaps for Linda it has been successful and I am glad, but I have heard of many cases where it does not. I use a very good probiotic, which is designed specifically to provide the flora required by the intimate area of a women's body, especially after antibiotic use. I take two a day and I really feel it is helpful. Good luck.

Loulie, what are you calling the traditional dose of Cefalexin? I'm on that right now for the 2nd time. One more day to go, and sadly it isn't working as I still have symptoms. I am taking 500mg 3x a day. I totally understand about not being able to handle certain antibiotics. I was ok the first time on Bactrim, but the last time I got very ill. There are only a about 4-5 oral antibiotics for ecoli. I spent a day and one half in the hospital last week because I developed a fever and worried it was moving to the kidney. All they did was put a band-aid on the problem. I have IV once a day for two days. It was in the same family as the Cefalexin.
I am 70 years old and this is my very first UTI. It started in October 6 and has continued to present. I never took any antibiotics for anything before this. I am scared beyond belief because doctors don't seem to care.

Hi Marilee - I have just sent you the name of the probiotic.
You are taking what I would call a traditional dose: 500mg 3x day and the doctor has probably prescribed you 21 tabs. That is the recommended dose and it would be diffiuclt to find a doctor prepared to prescribe more than this and for longer. I take steroids for PMR and steroids do encourage more UTIs. I follow the PMR page on Patient and only a few days ago, there was a discussion on UTIs and several people mentioned high, long term doses of cefalexin as being a successful way of eliminating the bacteria from the body but that it is difficult to find a doctor prepared to prescribe the drugs.
I am 69 and have had constant UTIs for years and years. It was because of my desperation at becoming allergic to most antibiotics that the urologist suggested the urethral dilation. As this is your first episode and it has gone on for over two months, it would seem that there is more to it than just a simple UTI. Do you drink between 2- 3 litres of water a day? That is essential. Don't bother with cranberry juice or tablets. Avoid accidic foods and drink.
I am sorry you are feeling scared but completely understand. I too have been through periods of depression and fear worrying how the situation was to be resolved. Try not to worry. There are still things that they can do to help you, so fingers crossed they will find the key to fixing you soon x

My UTI has returned for the 3rd time in 2 1/2 months. I am now taking Cephalexin. can you give me the name of the Probiotic that you take.
