My life with TOF...now another surgery.

Hi I'm currently 38 years old. I had TOF repaired when I was 2 in 1980...I got lost in the system after moving out of my parents house. Well in October I finally decided to go to the doctors after having two almost fainting spells and lots of palpitations.

After having an echo done it was determined that it has come time to have my pulmonic valve replaced.I'm kind of freaking out. I got to pick when it will happen so it looks like May it is....I'm a teacher so I decided during summer break would be best. Any helpful words would be great.

Hi Athena, i cant really cimnent on having a valve change done, all i can say is I can say is that after a long talk with my heart specialist, he took me through the procedure as he thought i I might need the same opperation.i was freakng out as iremember when i had my first round of heart surgery at 7 years old. ( I was one of the first in uk as the echo cardiagram had only been sorted 18 months before) He assured me that though it's not a routine op, its now we'll understood and a " sorted" procedure. Talk long and hard with your doctor and don't go down the Doctor Google route. All you reed are horrible stories.

I have just had to have a pacemaker done at the age of 51. Nothing to do with the T O F. Just the things happen. It's scary. Yes..... It's the unknown...yes...... BUT. Lots of people have it done. TALK to the specialist....it will be fine.

At least We are getting a second bit or even 3rd bite at the cherry. Some people don't get any warning and it's game over. Embrace the fact that you have resolved the problem and it WILL be resolved and you will carry on with your life.

Enjoy every minute and doesn't waste presouis heart beats on time wasters..........

    Take care, and

    TALK To YOUR SPECIALIST

( Have i said that already??)

Im afraid i cant give you many words of incouragement as im in the same boat as you. I always lived in hope that i wouldn't need another operation, but reality has smacked me in the face. I have a 1 year old and im scared on anything bad happening and not being there for her, but i keep reminding myself that im lucky that i know. Im lucky that something can be done, as so many dont know. We can do it together x

You will be just fine . I have tof with a pulmanary replacement with a pig valve its now 10 years later and still going extremely strong. Ive had 2 open heart surgeries one as a baby next at 16 , i had a hole in my heart as well as dealt with extreme arythmia through out my teens wich once my valve was replaced at 16 was nothing like it used to be. Changed my life aswell as saved it.

You will do great and youll feel even better once healed up.
