eyes still itchy and watery discharge

Posted , 3 users are following.

So I've sustained an eye infection in China, for about a month without proper treatement. Once I left China, it cured within five days of proper treatement, but my eyelids were swollen and having a gritty sensation and watery discharge. The swelling got. better over time.but the symptoms won't disappear, it's been more than two months.

One eye care professional said that my eyes had absolutely nothing, and another one that it was just a bad congestion. I have no.idea what to think.

Sounds like dry eyes and concretions. I would suggest seeking a second opinion . Did the dr inspect the underneath of the eyelids for concretions

These can rub the eye causing grittiness, headaches, dry eye and general feeling of being unwell.

I think Sally is spot on...sounds like dry eyes etc. As a first aid relief get some artificial tears eye drops,or something similar. You need to get this identified and treated properly . are you in UK now?

Thanks Marina. I had this and it is horrible. It should be taken seriously. I awas prescribed lacrilube  cream at night, then artificial  ear drops afterarss. I had the concretions removed and got immediarte relief but there were so may I had to keep going back to have them removed. Phew! What a relief though. I avoided the following.

      Shampoo and hair conditioner.

Only washed my hair once every two weeks under the shower making sure the shampoo did not get into my eyes .

Deodrants, talcum powder wore glasses all the time especially near any water that could splash into my eyes. Also avoid fumes of any description as they irritate the eyes.

Keep away from fires indoor and outdoor. Get the picture.

I used tissues wrung out in tepid water then placed over the closed eyes for a few minutes. This helped as well.

You are 100% right Sally.  i have had this for some time and was not given the right treatment. As a result I now have a corneal ulcer. Only small but can be excruciating if it gets infected.  It should be taken more seriously as soon as a patient complains. GPs and ophthalmologists tend to give the mildest of medications, which often are not enough and it has certainly been a long hard journey to find the regime that suits me best. Its different for everyone......there is no "one treatment fits all".  i was referred to a Corneal specialist [not many about] after a particularly painful episode.

Sorry to hear this. What did the corneal ulcer specialist say?

      How are you now?

The diagnosis was Thygersons Keratitis.    I have now realised that this has been inherited from my Mother's side of the family...along with Glaucoma, which is well controlled with eye drops. My Mum herself didnt have any problems but her sister suffered almost identically. My regime now is a good blob of Simple eye ointment every night, but directed under the upper lid so that it squashes down over the eye during the night. I tried Lacrilube but it didnt clear very quickly in the morning and I developed headaches trying to focus through the haze. Also  Carmize 1% drops during the day if needed.  Have to keep away from any sort of breeze, air conditioning, fans etc,and have bought a great pair of close fitting polarised glasses from Amazon. if i drive I have to shut down all the fans and vents for air con.    At first I only had Hypromellose suggested and also Viscotears, but these were just not sufficient.  Aircon in restaurants can be a nightmare...finding that precious seat where I am sheltered from the blast of air. Also the air in aircraft can be an absolute menace,so I wear my protective glasses on every flight.I am used to strange looks now, although sometimes people can make unnecessary and ignorant comments.

Also absolutely no eye make up,and no cleaning sprays around the house. Used to wonder why my eyes felt so dry after cleaning windows with a spray....now I know why.

So many new sufferers think it will get better on its own and its awful when you learn its treatment for life, but find the treatment that is ideal for you and you learn to live with it eventually

Forgot to say,I am going to try Sea Buckthorn oil with Omega 7.Taken by mouth. There have been some good reports of this,so its worth a try.  I did try taking Omega fish oils 5-6 capsules a day but didnt think it helped me at all.
