I had a thyroid ultrasound done and it said I have a heterogeneous enlarged thyroid with nodules. I have every hypothyroid symptom, swelling in my neck, sore throat, trouble swallowing. The doctor will only check my TSH which is 1.5, she refuses to do any other thyroid bloodwork, refuses to refer me to a specialist and refuses medicine or and no more testing. What should I do from here?

I'm hoping to get into an endocrinologist, since she won't give me a referral. I'm starting to think I'm crazy, since she's blowing it off like nothing is wrong at all.

why , in the name of God does she think have an enlarged Thyroid with nodules is NOT a medical Problem .
see another Dr. in your practice ... one who has passed her Medical exams
Can you make a private appointment with an Endocrinologist that way
you would not need a referral.
... But the thing is !! YOU NEED TREATMENT for your condition .
if you are young .. or even if youre not ! take someone ..in the family with you and go see your Dr. again to insist on help .
can you say what exactly she said when she refused .

This is actually the second doctor in the practice I have seen. The first doctor said oh you just have a sinus infection, that's why your throat is swollen. Here's a z-pack. And my tsh is 1.5, both have said it's not high enough to treat me AND since my ultrasound said "appears non cancerous" she thinks I will be just fine.

I'm kind of just stuck on where to go from here, I wanted to make sure my concerns about my thyroid tests were ligitamate concerns. Thanks for your help

take a family member with you and ask for something to be done .
Nodules on your Thyroid !! ... I think you should Google that !
..... in fact print it and take it and show it to your doctor...
or ......you could do nothing !
and I would not advise that.
you have a medical problem which should be addressed .

I did end up googling all of the information that came back on my ultrasound, I'm afraid that the doctors doing nothing and treating it like it no big deal is going to make it worse. I read that just having an enlarged thyroid gland was bad and having nodules was bad too. I guess I just assumed since my doctors acted like it wasn't a big deal, I've blown it off too. After today I decided to ask opinions from anyone who maybe knows what I'm going through. I'm only 29 and I feel like my body is getting worse by the day, I'm going to call an endocrinologist and see if they will see me without a referral. Thanks for your advise.

anytime Luvvie ... you simply put , MUST see someone who will help you.
and remember they take you a lot more seriously when you are accompanied by a Mother, sister aunt , cousin or the likes .. I,e, someone who they see as a ' witness' to their possible mistakes.....

Hello Erin, the sort of compound nodule you're describing is most likely autoimmune disease, where the body attacks the thyroid gland, called Hashimotos disease. With Hashimotos you often don't get highly elevated TSH. But autoimmune disease that shows up in the thyroid isn't isolated to the thyroid, it also affects the rest of the body to various degrees, particularly the gut.
Get a new network. It sounds like the group you're going to is like-minded, so trying a third doc within the same network is unlikely to yield results.
You may get better results with a naturopath because you need to deal with the autoimmune disease and conditions triggering the autoimmune response. Meanwhile, you'll need to support your thyroid function. I'd start with a kelp/herbal thyroid support. Be sure you get one from a high quality reputable company. This is basically the first step to support your thyroid.
A high protein paleo style diet will help, as do amino acid supplements, multivitamin, multimineral. Also glutenfree diet- absolutely NO CHEATING on the gluten. No wheat, rye or barley. You'll need to do some research on this, as wheat is in everything, and triggers the immune system.
There are are many things you can do on your own to slow and reverse thyroid disease. It's super important that you care for your thyroid gland, as prevention now will save you a lifetime of illness.
I was able to reduce my very large compound cyst by a combination of acupuncture and boron therapy. (A word of caution, the synthetic meds caused my cyst to grow larger.)
