Fatty Liver?

My son was diagnosed with GPA in 2015.  He never really acheived remission but finally started to feel better when he stopped the cyclophosamide and started Rituxan.  He had a mild relaspe 3 months ago and upped his Prednisone again.

He had an abdominal ultrasound that showed a fatty liver.  The Dr told him to stop drinking.  My son does not drink.  So now we are left wondering if the disease or any of the many meds might have contributed to this.  He started Methotroxate 3 months ago.  I will add that he seems to get the worse of the side effects of medicine.  He developed Avascular Necrosis in both knees because of the high does of Prednisone, along with the moon face and rash. Does anyone out there have the same fatty liver?

    Hi,

My son is on all those meds and still had the knee problems. Thankfully they have healed. Hopefully the specialist will back today. It could be caused by the methotrexate.

    Hello Michael's mom

I too have GPA - and wonder if your doc is experienced in Vasculitis? There are a number who are. Which state are you in?

    Keep fighting!

We are in Canada. It was his GP who ordered the scan. He is waiting to hear back from his specialist.

      OK

Have you checked out Vasculitis Canada? Could be helpful. I found a specialist unit here in the UK .

I was diagnosed with GPA in June 2009. I too have fattty liver disease, but I have never drink. I have taken a lot of predisone all of my life for sinuses infections. I was diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease after I went thru my Wegener's treatment. I also became a type 2 diabetic. I have an enlarge heart and a heart mummer. I've also had a small stroke. I'm 68 years old. I know your son is a lot younger that me. He needs to fight and never give up. He has my blessings.

Thank you so much Sarah.  His specialist did get back to him about the fatty liver.  Not much he can do about it.  He is doing quite well on the methotroxate so we are reluctant to change.  We are very watchful of what he is eating.  His Dr's do not seem concerned about it so we will focus on the diet and getting him on his feet and walking.

A year ago my finger nails broke off to the quick. I started taking Hair, Skin & Nails multi vitamins. I also started taking a multi vitamin and a Vitamin for my eyes. I'm also taking Aricept for my memory. I now have fingernails and my memory has improved. I feel like the vitamins have helped. I don't know if the vitamins or the Aricept helped, but I have  noticed a difference in my memory. I also have Wegener's in my right eye is why I take the vitamin for the eyes. Tell him to have faith and fight this disease. I I wish I had been diagnosed earlier so I could fight this disease.

Hi. Apparently a side effect of Cyclo could be cancer of the liver. Maybe the Cyclo has caused some damage. Sorry to scare you but it might be worth asking a few questions about it.

Hope your son gets better soon.

Everything about this disease is scary.  He had an ultrasound done on the liver and it seems to be fat.  They will keep an eye on his liver as well as all his organs for several years now.  I hate that cyclophosimide.  It did not work for him at all.  The Rituxan is great.  He felt better within a few days.  Now hes on methotroxate and it tolerating that well.  Lose dose.  He is doing really well.  His knees have healed and he is getting around a bit better.  Slow going but hopefully he will be back to work by the summer.
