Is it chostochondritis?

Anyone else been told it was something else before getting a proper diagnosis? Or anyone think it might be something else but can't get proper testing?

This is starting to get scary . I have a rheumatologist

Appoinment today And I am hoping for some

    Answers . My

Doctor is telling me nothing just sending me for X-rays . Sonograms . Blood work .

  • Posted

I was told I had gerd that's it. I've had ultrasounds on all major organs xrays ekgs blood work and a CT scan they can find nothing

  • Posted

I got tested for heart problems and loads of blood tests for all sorts of things plus got my chest and Lungs x-rayed to rule anything out before they could then diagnose costo.
    • Posted

So they diagnosed it as that ? After the test did they come out And say that's what it is ? And other than a chest X-ray what other heart test did you take ?

    • Posted

They did a scan I cannot remember the name but electrodes are attached to your top half and the specialist moves a scanner around your heart and monitors the results online. It is basically a question of ruling all the serious stuff out, plus when you or they press down on the particular area of your ribs, in my case the top left it is tender, and consistently painful, plus breathing for me can feel as if I am having panic attacks, except I am not but my breathing is shallow....I think it is slightly different for everyone.

I have those symptoms . Shallow breathing . Sore scrips chest . When you press the center of sternum it aches, all of

That . I had an ekg but not echocardiogram. My doc does not feel it's heart related. Am feeling it in back sometimes and just feeling down . This is taking a toll . We need answers and a cure . I was tested for

Lupus Ana rheumatoid factor , Lyme disease . Sonogram of organs , chest X-rays its like come on

It sounds like you might have costochondritis......I don't think there is a cure...it's an inflammation of ligaments and needs time to go down but because of where it is is perhaps vulnerable. I have had mine for about 13 weeks and I try not to feel down. It means I can't do yoga or go swimming or even talk for very long!!! There are exercises recommended online which I am going to try it will come up if you google it. If I put the link in it will moderate it so I can't. Also try this hot drink slices of ginger, tsp tumeric, tsps honey helps with inflammation really good and helps sleep if taken last thing at night which I am going to do right now.x

Would a chest X-ray pick up costochondritis??

I had a chest X-ray in November and it was clear.

But I have this constant pain in the centre of my chest between my breast bone/sternum area. It hurts quite abit when the area is pressed on, and it's like a burning pain pretty much all the time.

I'm seeing my gp tomorrow, what tests will they do to see if it's Costco ?

    • Posted

A chest X-ray will not pick up this Costo thing . Have had like 4. I went to a rheumatologist last week and they sent me for further blood work up . To check for inflammation tion and urea acid etc. most ppl on this forum have had several exams all to be negative and my doctor still has not definitively said it's costo. Thankfully , I had a good few past days but when it does come

Back it's painful and scary . I have not done the extra blood work yet. Hope

      You find relief .

      Simone,

My pain feels like a muscle strain when I'm relaxed but if I press down on my chest wall ( in the top centre) it's really quite painful, almost a bruised pain but I know I haven't knocked it??

I'm using deep heat and i have some naproxen which I will take before bed, I've had the pain a few times but it comes and goes.

All my recent bloods and X-ray and ECG were all fine, no concerns??

      Could I have costochondritis???

    • Posted

Exactly how mine feels . Like if you lie a certain way , or turn in a certain position , cough , etc you get that sharp feeling through sternum . Feels totally

Like a strain yes and when you press on the center it's a sharp feeling painful through it. Also with me I was little concerned cause it hurt to take deep breaths. So my breathing felt

Shallow and that's very very scary . Past three days I have felt great . I prob will go get the blood work done but truthfully I am not

Trying. To be placed on some streroids .

      Simone,

Sounds exactly like me , I can't think what may have caused it?

I used to go to kettlebells which obviously puts a lot of strain on my chest but I haven't been for quite some time but I can't think of anything else it could be?

What pain killers are you on and do they help?

    • Posted

      When the attacks come

It's very scary And I am surprised how many

Doctors are unaware of 'tis condition . Like , all these ppl on ''this forum apparently have Costo or something. Similar , yet when you describe symptoms to a GP they are looking at you like it's all in your head . Insane . My Gp gave me all type of tests and still had no response . That's when this forum helped me to realize that I should seek a rheumatologist.

Am on nothing ! Advil at most when I seriously have had enough . Stress totally

Worsens this condition . I have been trying to eat more anti inflammatory foods and heating pads etc . Today is a good day but it tough because I get scared to work out . Like when you feel short of breath or pain I need sternum you are so not motivated to be exercising . Kettle balls I would stay shy if that type of exercise and opt for a gentle yoga or some stretching .

I use deep heat and ibuprofen and I've used ice packs too, just want it diagnosed so atleast I know what I'm dealing with x

      Hate to admit but with

This you will be diagnosing yourself. Unless your doctors are just very knowledgeable about this condition . I went to. A specialist and upon hearing my complaints did not

      Come

Out and say Costo . In fact I brought it up to him .

    • Posted

I'm seeing the doctor tomorrow, I've seen them before with chest pains but they say anxiety but it's not!! Pain is increased with anxiety though 😞

    • Posted

They told me exact same thing ! Please hang in there . They prob gave you ekg? Chest X-ray? Echo cardiogram ? Please keep me Informed . You prob will go to a rheumatologist as well in the end. Be well ! ExPlain your symptoms in full detail . Stay in touch !

Hi According to my GP, X rays do not pick up costo..with me they reached a diagnosis by a process of elimination. Checked out heart and lungs and when they were all clear, finally said ok it is costo which is what yours sounds like. that is what mine is like plus my breathing is also affected, short, heavy at times I feel like I am having a panic attack but it is because it is hard to draw a decent breath. I hope that makes sense

My GP prescribed NAproxen 500mg twice a day plus I take paracetemol every 4/6 hrs. It simply takes the edge of it. I am also trying to eat as many anti inflammatory foods as possible plus I now drink a hot tea of 1 tsp tumeric., slices ginger(ginger powder) 2 tsps honey at least twice a day as Tumeric is meant to have excellent anti inflammatory properties. I have only started this, so who knows?? It is hard getting used to but heat and keeping the chest area relaxed helps 💖

Hi ! The breathing part sounds exactly like me . Did doctors say this is serious ? Or is it a benign condition ? Scary when the

      Breathing feels shallow .

    • Posted

It's not serious. It is scary and I think that is what makes it worse. Once you realise what is going on then you can understand why your breath is so short. Doesn't make life easier!!!! I do try to take deep breaths as it is important, so they say, to keep your lungs open, so every so often, when I remember , I'll do some deep breathing. It hurts. I just try to keep calm. If this is what I have and this is the affect it is having for the moment on my life then there is not much I can do about it except be as healthy as  possible. For the moment it has meant changes in that I cannot do all the things I used to do but......hopefully that will pass be angry won't make the costo go away and it makes it worse

    • Posted

Of course stress makes it worse . I just wondering why many doctors are not aware it this ? Have you seen a rheumatologist? Or been referred to one ?

    • Posted

My doctors and online are very vague about how long Costco might last 6 months, 2 years, forever............!!!!!!! I have not met anyone with it or who has had it yet
    • Posted

You have met all of us who have this . It's been 3 years for me. I only

Asked about rheumatologist because they are taking specific blood work to see if I have inflammation markers . But it appears that I do have Costo . Doctors do not know much about this but to me they should .

      Valentine,

I have taken 2 naproxen about an hour or so ago and they seem to have taken the edge off the pain but I know I'll wake up in the morning and the pain will be back sad

    • Posted

I was talking to someone at work and my parents about it and they've never heard of it ??

    • Posted

No one has heard of this , that's what makes it so darn scary. We have to do our own research

    • Posted

According to online web md and others in this forum who have been properly diagnosed ,

The answer is no . Although it seems so damaging and serious .

    • Posted

I just can't understand how you can just suddenly get it????

I have not done any form of exercise that would put a strain on my chest for about 6 months, I've not had a cold or anything to set it off, it's quite concerning?

    • Posted

When you hear form everyone it's helpful but

Then it appears to be no relief . This is weird

    • Posted

I feel better for taking 2 naproxen and putting deep heat on my chest.

      Has anyone tried Acetaminophen???

    • Posted

My apologies I meant someone face to face.....it is really good having this online community but it is strange that until I was diagnosed with Costo I had never heard of it or met anyone who had it. As you say it seems the GP's do not really know much about it. At least I know my heart, lungs etc are healthy!!!! I just can't use them to full capacity at the moment, which is ironic!!!

    • Posted

I know it is strange......for something that is unheard off and not serious it is actually quite debilitating. Wierd🙄

    • Posted

No apologies. I have never met anyone with this condition neither . Just weird . Is is an autoimmune disease or muscular ? That's the question
