I'm amazed you've never noticed a light coating on your tongue before! We all get it from time to time, for a variety of reasons. The usual causes are smoking, poor oral hygiene, constipation or a cold. A photo wouldn't be all that helpful, as it's difficult to tell the difference between thrush and a normal coating just at a glance.

Even if it was thrush there'd be absolutely no cause for alarm. We all carry thrush spores in our bodies, and they occasionally get slightly out of control and produce symptoms.

There are usually other symptoms with thrush - especially soreness of the mouth and throat. It can sometimes cause bleeding cracks at the corners of your mouth too.

If this fits your symptoms, make an appointment with your doctor to get it checked out. It can quite easily be treated. Otherwise don't worry about it.

Hi guys, let me explain my problem properly once

I have a tongue that is not particularly abnormal, but to describe it properly, I think I have bad breath which I'm not sure if it's cause by oral problems or not, because I maintain very good oral hygiene

Maybe my problem is respiratory or something else, I just don't know what, because I constantly do have a sensation of something that I can't describe in my throat and I constantly swallow phlegm or mucus or whatever you call it. Where it gets really confusing for me is that I don't have any obvious respiratory symptoms (never had asthma or bronchitis, don't have allergies to foods or dairy or dust) and I don't even remember when I last had even the slightest of a cough. So I'm not sure at all if I should go see a dentist or an ENT specialist

I'm constantly worried about my breath, although no one except my kid sister has ever said anything about it, and I regularly check the odour of my breath from time to time during the course of the day

When I do the breath test of running my finger down my tongue from back to front, I sometimes notice a little bit of an odour, that is not typical bad breath, but I'd say something that is not very pleasant. Don't know if it's oral or because of the phlegm that I regularly spit out

Also, my spit is very thick (when I spit into the sink it takes one or two splashes of running water for it to successfully make its way down the drain in the middle). The spit kind of resembles whitish-transparent phlegm

What should I do? I'm even afraid to ask out the girl I like because of this and it's causing me problems in general life (I'm 17 and a half btw)

Don't get too worried about this, David. We all have bad breath from time to time, and it's practically universal first thing in the morning.

Do you see a dentist regularly? I mean at least once a year. This is always a good place to start. Tell your dentist everything you've told us here. He/she will also be well-placed to advise you on whether or not you should see an ENT doctor or your GP.

I'm afraid quite a lot of us (including me) have a life-long tendency to catarrh without any treatable cause ever being found.
