CBT/Pain clinics

Hi, just a quick question. I've been referred for CBT and to a pain clinic to help me manage the fibro. Just  wondering what people's experiences are of these and if they have helped?

Thanks

Hi hope ur gd. I have done cbt. Firstly it wasn't what I thought it was. To be honest I was sure what it was going to be like at all. I found it helpd a little while I was attending it but when I finished I went bk down hill again. I didn't get much relief with pain more my anxiety and depression even though they'r linked.

I've been told by my gp the pain clinics very similar.

Just go in with a open mind. What I kept telling myself this person doesn't no u or anything or anyone u do. So just let it all out. It's abit like this only we're faceless.

    Good luck xx

Hi, thanks for your reply. I'm sorry to hear the cbt didn't help long term. I've been to counselling for anxiety and depression before and to be honest I think it may have actually made me feel more depressed! neutral. Though to be fair it was only 3 sessions as I got too ill to keep going.

Maybe the cbt will be better. I've read that it's more to do with the here and now and not raking over the past. Oh well, if all it allows me to do is let out the tears, then good, cause I hold them in too much, and a release of tension will be good for me (and my kids biggrin).

    Hi Mari,

I went to a pain clinic who then referred me to some rehab sessions, this was for 2 weeks. I found it informative and I met some lovely people who you could relate to, unlike some members of the family and negative friends who didn't understand. This helped me in my own way. CBT was ok, my therapist helped me recognise that I was having panic attacks when I really thought I was going to die!! She then referred me to further councilling who then recognised that some of my symptoms looked towards a diagnosis of PTSD. These sessions I personally find are useful and feel relaxed with my therapist. Hope you have the same experience!!

Good luck with your therapy, keep posted on your experience

Hi Mandy, I hope your panic attacks are under control. I went through a period of having them a number of times in a week and thinking I was going to die every time too! I used to scream on my ex husband to come...god knows what the neighbours thought!!

Can I ask a little more about what actually happens at a pain clinic? I have no clue about them at all.

      Hi Mari

Ya, I had a 1-1session just explaining about condition and answering questions then they invited me to a couple of weeks of rehab which was with a group of about 7 people including me. Not everyone had fibromyalgia or CFS/ME but were there due to long term chronic pain. Therapist talks to us about meds, exercises, specialists, our own experiences. We had relaxation time listening to chilled music, we went to hospital canteen together to eat lunch. It was very nice actually, very exhausting so be sure to go to bed extra early! At the end of the 2weeks I had another 1-1 and was asked what my goals were and we talked over the previous 2 weeks

That's it really, give it a try Mari and see how you go. Oh, the therapist got me booked into some sessions of hydrotherapy, that was so relaxing.

      Hope this help

I've been to pain management which included cbt physio and pain management. To be honest, it was a 12 week course and in a group environment, I found it more useful to speak within the group, you get tips and can relate to other members. The cbt and class lessons I found not very helpful and quite boring. But, everyone gets different experiences from it. Good luck

Hi Trisha, thanks for that. The pain clinics are sounding more helpful that the cbt might be. It will honestly be good to speak to other people who understand chronic pain (not just the odd ache!). Of course people on here are very helpful and lovely too! xxx

I've done cbt on phone and I'm a group found it didn't help me at all and I'm going to a pain clinic but they haven't helped me either as I'm still in pain and really want a good pain relief as i have to work and obviously stay alert to work. But maybe you will get a better Dr to see at the pain clinic than the one I've got. I've seem him for about 3 yrs and no better at all. Good luck and best wishes to you.
