Severe ankle pain

hi

had pain lateral calf that started bit after I tried to stop an elevator with my leg. I didn't think about the elevator incidence and took naproxen for the lateral calf pain. Pain kept getting worse and kept taking extra strength Tylenol round the clock working etc. Got to a point felt pins and needles.  Sent MRI of ankle and showed subtalar

efusion and nothing more. Sent me for EMG because of tingling pins and needles feeling. The small electric shock testing of EMG was ok but then the neurologist told me to lay down and I felt excruciating pain in my calf. I screamed in agony as she told me to relax. The Day following the EMG I was not able to walk out of bed.

I limped in pain.  I thought a nerve was irritated but would be better - instead it has gotten worse.

I need a cane to walk in the morning and literally hop to the bathroom and couch. I am in constant pain and it is worse when I get up after sitting with my feet up for awhile. Ihad the EMG in October and cannot believe I now am walking with a cane.

I also don't understand why nothing shows up on the MRI. The pain is excruciating - even walking with a cane I wince.

If anybody has any ideas please help - it's not in my head. Doctors move my foot and don't see anything broken.  They do not see me when I get up in the morning or when I get up from the couch.

Yes I have but MRI shows nothing so stuck with the pain because wherever I go for a second opinion they rely on MRI

    Hi Alley,

I'm also living with constant pain. I'm faithful that it cannot last forever. The best recommendations I've had so far is filling cotton socks with rice and stick them in the microwave. The other lifesaver: large Ziplock bags half rubbing alcohol and water freeze them they create a wonderful gel packs! Make sure to get a few pillows that are comfortable and a towel in case they break. Keep your attitude up!!!

I had a PT that completely twisted my foot and I was screaming for him to stop. From initially making progress, this, hurt worse than the three surgeries.

Keep coming to the website because everyone is polite and have good tips! Take good care and speedy recovery! Monica

Thank you for your tips. I am trying hard to be upbeat but the pain is really taking it's toll. What are you doing pt for?

Had complete ankle reconsruction, three surgeries after a bad fall in my kitchen! Had some PTs come to my apartment. There are days that I feel like crying, in so much pain! I have tried muscle relaxants, harsh opiates, Tylenol, ibuprofen, and found a solution for now ( besides ice and heat). There are days that I don't know what to do.

Omg feel so bad for you, hope pt helps. I can't put pressure on my ankle and am in constant pain. Do the ice and heat thing. Have baskets full of pills that don't help.  I take Gabapentin which is supposed to relax the nerves - but don't find any help. Take aleve and Tylenol. I went for a cortisone shot and ended up in the hospital 3 days later.  Made pain so much worse could not even stand.

I hope things will get better for us soon. Thanks so much for your help and let me know how pt helps wink

Yes! To get better soon! I'm skeptical some days and others hopeful. In the past months, with debilitating pain, a teenager etc. It has wore me out! I just keep thinking that it can never get worse🤗 I'll keep you in my prayers 👍 There will be days that are horrible and other days manageable.

One thing that I learned (the hard way), is that the days that are tolerable, don't force yourself very hard👞 Good days I tried to accomplish everything and then would be in severe pain for two or three days after. I'm relearning to do everything slow. It takes more time but I feel safer!

Thank you👍 Every day one 👞 at a time. Best advice is to do everything slowly. If anything I used to do took me an hour, now it takes two and a half hours. Even going down the stairs (8 of them) concerns me.

Find comfort and support in this group!!!

There are great people everywhere 😇 I'm just praying and trying to get through this🤗

Take good care and take everything slow. We want everything fast, however, injuries may take longer than predicted. Hang in there!

I don't mind slow - it's the pain when walking especially mornings - hope something gives soon wink

Alley, I understand how uncomfortable and horrible this can besad There are entire nights which I have not caught a wink of sleep, even with ice, heat packs, everything! However if I do find a position, I will lay very still and not move.

About the mornings, it could perhaps be due to not moving. Maybe, wake a bit earlier and try some light stretching before getting out of bed👍 In my case I have tried light massage on both my legs with vertiver oil or arnica. Recently I purchased some Chinese patches with camphor and menthol which seem to work for a while!

When in severe pain I found some YouTube videos with Delta waves, which help anxiety. Another one has been self-hypnosis for pain relief.

Keep in touch and reading these forums is a wonderful relief! You are not alone at all🌲

Alley, do not lose hope! I know how hard days can be. For me also it has been so debilitating and a humbling experience all together. Everyone who I have been in touch with tells me that it has lasted too long. If I had a choice, I would be walking pain free.

Pain is very real and serious. It is not in your head👍 I will pray for everyone who is struggling with pain. Do not lose hope👑 Monica

Trying hard but getting rude doctors doesn't help. Pain non stop depressing when no answer near. Thank you for your support

I injured my ankle 13 years ago, torn ligaments. Also developed Complex Pain Syndrome aka R S D. I had physical therapy twice, arthroscopic surgery had a lot of scar tissue. It was a great pain management doctor that diagnosed the CPS, I saw a lot of orthopaedic doctors because the pain was not going away. I have been under pain management for the past 13 years. Keep telling your doctor that nothing is working. The only procedure I had done I did not like was a nerve conductive, that tells how much nerve damage you have. So keep telling your doctor what is not working make he or she suggest what else could be causing it. Good Luck.
