Funny Smells for the last 4-6 weeks

Hi everyone

I am not sure if this is the best place to ask these questions, so apologies if not and hope this doesn't sound to strange.

Ok, for the last few weeks but over the last 6 days I am constantly smelling either a burning smell but most of all I keep smelling toast, this can be anywhere Car, street, home. I keep saying to my wife and she say she can't smell anything.

Any ideas or suggestions would be great.?

Thanks in advance.

George

I've had this- I used to think it was the ghost of the last owner of our house! But I suspect it is linked with my chronic sinus problem. Have you had a cold/flu/chest infection recently? If so, try using nasal rinsing with saline- or perhaps a decongestant. But there are other causes so do see your GP if it keeps on bothering you.

      Hi

Thanks for replying. I haven't had a cold, flu or chest infection, I very rarely get sick like that.

I will try some nasel rinsing and see if that helps.

If not I will see my GP.

      Thanks :-)

Certainly seems a reasonable place to ask such questions, and no it doesn't sound strange! smile

Such problems are not unknown and some causes are more significant than others, so always worth getting a medical opinion if it persists - I'd say you've left it a reasonable length of time so perhaps worth seeing your GP. Then if s/he needs to refer you to an ENT specialist, you can at least get the ball rolling as I imagine the problem must be very irritating to live with (if it's anything like what I've had in the past - now relieved by nasal spray).

Meanwhile, a nasal rinse is probably worth a go - I think you can get ready-made saline from a pharmacy, but it's quite easy to make at home - boil a cupful of fresh water, dissolve some pure salt (not table salt, which has additives) in it and let the water cool naturally right down to lukewarm before use. See online for information about the right proportions of salt to water - I think I normally use about half a teaspoon but you may have to adjust it if it feels uncomfortable. Good luck.

      Hi

Thanks for replying and your reassuring words that it wasn't a strange question.

I have started with the saline sprays and so far noticed no difference, but it's only been 2 days.

I have for the past 8 yrs had many problems with my spine and have been left in a fairly debilitated.

I actually booked an appointment with My GP, as I have also been having some other symptoms which I thought was related to my back, in that I am getting lots of muscle spasms when I lay down, and I keep sweating massively when not doing anything strenuous, and I have uncontrollable shakes. She was very shocked upon seeing me how different I have looked as I see her every 4-6 weeks.

I went through everything with her and she asked one of the other Dr to come in as she specialise in Nuroligical things. She has booked me for a couple of urgent scans which will happen within 14 days, for the burnt toast smells she was worried about phantosmia which she said could be heart, lung or even something in the brain, but sometimes it is just an infection further up the nasel path and I am seeing ENT specialist in 2 days time and she spoke to them and they are going to give me some sedation and put a camera up my nose and down throat just to be 100% so that and the scans might help. Regarding the nuerological side the Dr did some I guess standard tests, strengths, weaknesses etc. She has also referred me to see specialists and asked my orthopaedic team to be involved at the clinic, she said she's worried re nuero signs and I'm showing signs of Parkinson's or similar.

I wish I didn't see them now as I have been so worried all weekend, as I said I have had serious spinal problems, I am 38, 2 young kids 7 and 4, and now it would be my luck to have something else that's serious.

      Just a waiting game now.

So glad you're seeing the GP and that things are being looked into properly. I don't blame you for worrying but hang in there - you're far better off knowing what's going on and what might need treating, and it sounds like you will be in good hands. Best of luck with it all.

      Thanks Larches.

I did the silly thing which normally I don't do and go on google, I ended up coming away with everything you could think of and more. So sat my self down and finally went through my normal motions of don't worry it's something simple and then if it's worse just deal with it.

I am seeing ENT tomorrow, I had a call from the reg today as it's just short notice he wanted to go over everything and what they will do, which was reassuring, I did say that anything going up my nose and then down to throat I am dreading it, he said they will give me life sedation if I want it, he said enough to let it be done and follow instructions but you kinda forget.

      Fingers. Crossed :-)

      Hi all

So had ENT investigation yesterday, it wasn't as bad as. I thought, did gag a few time.

The said they couldn't find anything up my nose and throat, that could be causing the smell. ??.

      So now waiting on scans.
