Questions about umbilical hernia surgery...

Waiting for an apt. My surgeon literally couldn't get rid of me quick enough today, so I didn't get chance to ask the questions I wanted to!

Will the incision be horizontal or vertical? He mentioned that, occasionally, people can 'lose' their belly button!! Wtf?! I'd quite like to keep that! Why would that happen?!

    I had an incisional hernia repair and the cut is vertical, I do not know which way they cut for umbilical hernia, but I did loose my belly button, however this was my 4th abdominal surgery.  It may be because they cut through the belly button.  It does feel a bit weird not having a belly button but it is not a deal breaker,

    It certainly does and hygiene is v important after any kind of surgery
