Well it finally came around and I am a bundle of nerves!! Trying to keep myself busy and get everything set up at home.
Have packed for the hospital, signed up for Netflix, put together a basket of "stuff to do"! Can't imagine being stuck at home for so long, hope it goes by quickly!
Quick question to those who've been through it - am thinking of swapping bed sides to the side nearest the bathroom - it will mean getting into bed on my operated side - does this make any difference? Should I stick to the longer walk around the bed?! Seems to be that you need to go to the loo a lot after the op and want to make it as easy as possible lol! Maybe I'm over-thinking!
Struggling on paracetamol only this weekend. Had to give up the ibuprofen on Friday. Anda glass of wine would be nice too lol! Oh well, not long til it's all over. Will report back when it's done.
Thanks for all the great tips and information. Has been so useful to know what is involved and what to expect, and set up for recovery.

I got in on the operated side and was fine. I used a leg lifter for a couple of days - in a pinch a belt or strap will stand in for one. Sat on the edge, shuffled right back and lifted the leg in. But that's just me - everyone has varying degrees of ability afterwards.
Good luck tomorrow. Not that you'll need it, I'm sure!

I got in on the operated side, I actually thought that was easier, because getting out you are putting the weight on the good leg...Good Luck tomorrow, soon you'll be felling 100% better.

You will be fine I have had my 2nd hip replaced 6 weeks ago, time does go quickly so don't think you will get too bored. I had loads of things to keep me busy but haven't done half of them.I don't feel guilty though. As for swappING side on the bed I never for either op and had no problems.Good luck xx

Hi Sam, not long to go.... I'd stick with the same side of the bed, because that's what you're used to. I was worried about going to the loo in the night, because we live in an old house and there's 3 steps down to the bathroom from our bedroom. Actually it was completely fine, I'm sure you'll soon be whizzing around on your crutches.
As for fancying a glass of wine, I was out with some colleagues straight after work the day before my op, and I'm embarrassed to say that I had a small glass of wine. I didn't even think that I shouldn't be drinking.
Remember, my top tip, drink lots of water, and eat lots of roughage in hospital because they don't always let you out until you've been....
All the best, Judith

Hi Sam.
Had my RTHR in July last year, I wouldn't bother changing sides of the bed.
My experience was that for the first three weeks post op you do have to rely on others quite a lot but after that you will quite quickly find you are able to do more and more for yourself, I could get out of bed and make my way to the loo but when I came back to bed I had to wake my wife to help me get back in which she loved. Lol.
Get someone to buy lots of pillows and cushions to make you comfortable when you get home being able to prop yourself in a comfortable position is invaluable to start with take some pain meds and chill, expect to be very tired for the first 3-4 weeks post op and just sleep whenever you can.
So pleased with the result now, totally worth it!!
Good luck with the op and recovery.
Graham

So excited for you to be on the other side of this experience. I had my LTHR on February 2nd and I sleep on the left side of the bed (looking from the foot to the headboard) and have had no issues getting in and out of bed. I do have a step stool by the bed
Using the walker, I step onto my good leg to raise myself up to the bed and sit as far back as possible. I then use the handle of an upside down cane to assist me in transferring my left leg into position as I turn. You will find the correct position on the bed with minimal trial and error. My PT stated that I do a very good job of safely getting in and out of bed with this process.
Prayers for a healthy, peaceful, and speedy recovery.
Kristen
