Hi everyone

I'm new here and new to taking bisoprolol and literally feel whacked ! I'm 33 and have a heart murmur and an irregular heartbeat. I was put on bisoprolol 2 weeks ago after suffering horrendous palpitations for weeks that wouldn't calm down . And since a week or so ago I feel unwell granted my palpitations have More or less come to a hault but I feel so odd , Constantly feel nauseous , really exhausted , Achey in my upper back and down my arms . Shakey feeling inside and generally do not feel with it !!! I'm so active normally with a load of get up and go and can survive on 6 hours sleep but now I feel vile . Has anyone else felt this way ?

    Hi Kelly,

I was put on Bisoprolol 3 years ago (2.5mg), unfortunately it does seem to have rotten side effects though I'm not quite as bad as I used to be, some days I felt so tired that I could hardly put one foot in front of the other it was horrid, I sometimes get dizzy spells and I have put on about a stone (6 and a bit kg) which I have found difficult to shift, I haven't felt nauseous at all, I have also always been quite active so have found it hard, my GP suggested I take it at night as I think a lot of folk do but it didn't work for me, only because I always forgot to take it, try it for a few weeks then if you still feel dreadful on it then go talk to your doctor and see if there is something else he/she can put you on.

    Hello,

I've been on it for around 5 years and had no adverse reactions that I am aware of.  Mind you I am on a low dose, maybe a higher dose may cause problems.  Hope you can sort it out, possibly a different beta blocker?

      Hi Kelly

The best tip I was given by numerous folk on this very forum was to take my dose of Bisoprolol at night around two hours before bed. By the time you wake up in the morning and leave the house for the day its about 12 hours since you took you're dose therefore the tiredness has wore off or at the very least lessened a lot.

I as put on a low dose of bisoprolol on february 4th after being admitted to hospital with my heart racing at 197, i also have ectopic heartbeats, after 2 weeks of taking this drug and suffering horrible side effects, i felt weak, lightheaded, constantly tired and strange, unable to stay out for long when i was buying necessary food as i felt i was going to pass out.   I came off it but got the ectopic beats all day so i went back on it a few days ago, i needed some supplies this morning so went out, i feel awful couldn,t wait to come home.  I see a heart specialist March 22nd.   I also have a leaking heart valve.  I was very active despite the fact i am 69.

I was put on 2.5 mg end of December, even though I halved my dosage, symptoms are that it has turned me into an old man overnight, have put on about a stone in weight, my lungs dont feel as if they work now, I just want to sleep, so much lethargy that its an effort to draw breath never mind having to stand up in my job all day, the nurse at work could hardly detect my pulse so called an ambulance and told not to come back until I am better. I feel like a drunk zombie.

When I had to stop taking them for my angio-gram, after four days I was taken into hospital with heart problems far worst than I had before taking them.

I was put on 1.25 after my AF heart rate turned into SVT rate( 200+) but I am not a fan of medication.  Peter do you mind sharing what worse problem for your heart after you stop the bisoprolol?

I was told to stop taken Bisoprolol 5 days before my EP angio-gram.

By day four I was having such bad palitaions that I felt I was on the verge of collapse, I have my own ecg machine, this showed my at rest heartbeat as 149 but the ecg graph didnt look like a normal ecg, it looked like a child had just scribled up and down along the graph.

I had to stop again after A&E took me in for the weekend as a result, that was sunday before yesterday I last took Bisoprolol, first few days are fine then I get the bad palpitations though not quite as bad as before, come seevn days, yesterday, I seem to be free of the effects of Bisorolol, no longer feel like a zombie, I can feel fresh air in my lungs, and though I havnyt had to do anything strenous, I have had no heart rhythm problems for two days now.

Hi Peter, I hope your EP angio-gram went OK. Do let me know.  I had terrible withdrawal symptoms when I came off the Bisoprolol in March, it was so bad that I weaned myself off.  I had forgotten what life was like!  I was alert and as fresh as a daisy, but along came the tachycardias.  That's all by the by, as I have started my own thread on Bisoprolol if you care to look.  I too have my own ECG machine, it's a Healforce Prince 180B.  Fortunately for me, I've been able to read some of the waves, but have had to rely on the medical profession, which isn't going down well as they are so busy.  The Consultant was OK, but I can't of course continue a 1:1 via PALS.  Might I suggest that you take it to your next appt and/or make an appointment to see your GP?  We get so far, but there's a bit missing in the middle where we have no support.  What happened over the weekend, Peter?

Hi Denise, its all come along way since my comment, firstly, for the sake of the thread, my latest discharge letter claims I am allergic to Bisoprolol, and that it cuases me anapalaptic shock. Whilst I just spent two weeks in hospital, the blood oxygen thing on your finger generally had me down for 91 %, sometimes as low as 87%, minimum is suppossed to be 94.

I also started a thread on Bisoprolol making me feel as if I am in a dream or a drunk zombie, I still feel like this and I have been off beta-blockers for about a month now.

That first EP study I mentioned was a waste of time as they filled me up with so much Bisoprolol at the hospital that they couldnt induce my Ventricular tachycardio in order to see what is wrong, I was scheduled to be seen again on 9th June.

Couple of weeks ago however, I was back for an ambulance ride as 12 hours of VT and getting worst made me ring 111. St Georges kept me in for five days, during which time I frightened them with the sort of mild attack I get on a daily basis alone at home, but at least being connected to such a multilead ecg at the time helped them figure out what was wrong, so had another EP followed by a very long abulation, then another though fortuneatley this time they gave me some morphine.

Maybe it was the morphine, the lack of sleep, the Bisoprolol or the life long depression as a result of child abuse that caused me to attempt suicide when I arrived home to find my front door destroyed at the request of my mother who normally only contacts me once a year but decided to display some concern about my welfare 50 years to late when she couldnt contact me on the phone, because I was in hospital.

As for young policemen, they just love a chance to pretend they are busting a drugs gang instead of a vulnerable adult in hospital instead of knocking on the neighbours door or contacting the NHS.

I have the same monitor as you, whilst the interpretation it gives is rubbish, the actual graph completely matches

      Hi PeterSorry about your depression.

Just to understand you properly, when you say 'VT' do you REALLY mean VT or  SVT?

Huge difference and an easy mistake to make. Hope it was the latter.

Hi Peter, it was very kind of you to reply.  Sounds as if you've not been having a good time of it, not to mention your depression.  I'm sorry to learn that, but you keep going and do the best you can.  Sometimes in life, we all make mistakes and try to make amends.  Maybe that is what your mum is trying to do.  What are you taking then Peter, instead of Bisoprolol and what was the outcome of the latest EP?  You are a knowledgeable guy, I can tell and I'm intrigued as to how you know the interpretations are rubbish.  I often wonder about them and have spent goodness how long trying to interpret the waves.  My ex-nursing helps a good deal and I confess I have had to do an awful lot of studying.  I have so often felt abandoned.  We see the Consultant, lucky if we see a GP and I can understand just how busy they are, but it is awful when there is no where to turn to.  Take care of yourself and let me know how it went and how you are going.  Kindest Regards, Denise.

Hi Terence, yes indeed Ventricular Tachycardia not SVT, I said is it SVT and the doctor was quite quick to say no, you had VT not SVT.

Why do you say "hope it was the latter"?, I now read how dangerous long periods can be and it explains why they got so paniced when I had just a brief spell in hospital. Will it be ok now I have had the abulation or would it have caused some other damage as I sure feel damaged at the moment.

Hi Denise and thank you. I am on no medication now and have been off Beta Blockers for about a month now, My VTs should be gone with the heart abulation I just had, though I still get the trigger which I will start a thread on when I have more energy.

The interpretations said things like "Suspected fast heart beat" when I was having VTs and a graph that looked like a child scribbled up and down all the way along.

Hi Peter, thank you for letting me know.  That is fantastic!!!  I am so glad the ablation worked for you.  I hope you gain some strength soon and that life gets better and better.  One day at a time.  And yes, do please let us all know how you are doing.  Kindest regards, Denise.

You will feel damaged for a while, but they know what they're doing and will have destroyed the focus causing the VT. In a month or so things will settle down.

Hi there: Where did you get your ablation done? Are you happier having had it done? Thank you!

It was suppossed to be done at St Thomas' Hospital, but because I live in Croydon, the ambulance took me to the nearest heart hospital which was St Georges in Tooting. That is a fantastic hospital with fantastic hard working Irish nurses, its clean and the Catheter Ablation team were wonderful, I was very happy to get it done there although its not a pleasant proceedure.  Are your palpitations dangerous?
