How do I help my 6 year old daughter with her leakage?

Hi, I am a 17 year old girl, and recently I have been experiencing a lack of bladder control. The occurance happens after school and work when I am driving home. Today I had to even stop at a local supermarket in order to relieve myself. However when I stepped out of the car, my bladder released. I am so embarrassed and need help. How can I make this stop?

Yes she has now been diagnosed with an ectopic ureter, thus basically means one of her pipes from her kidney goes directly to her vagina rather than via her bladder which means she has a constant drip. She is waiting for a hospital appointment to discuss the options. Please google it, it solved all mysterys! Good luck. X

Thanks so much. At least you have a diagnosis. That's exactly what I think my daughter has. One constant believes that she has, one doesn't. They are insisting on medicating her for overactive bladder, which is making no difference. Did your daughter have to have a CT scan for a diagnosis? Or was it ultrasound only!? I'm so sorry for all of my questions! Would you mind letting me know the name of the diagnosing consultant? Thank you Emma x

We tried all the medicines possible, nothing worked! It wasn't until she had a thorough physical examination that the actual 'drip' was seen and witnessed by me as well that she was referred for an MRI scan as normal scan will not show it up. Are you in the UK? As we are based in Kent england. X

Thanks so much. Have managed to get an appointment this Friday with a specialist in Manchester. Upon researching him he has co written a medical paper on why young children are being mis diagnosed, essentially because the wrong tests are being done! I feel hopeful. Hi Emma, I have just come across this thread whilst searching the the Internet trying to find help for my 5 year old daughter who also suffers from leakage. I am desperate to help her as she keeps telling me she does not know she is doing it and is getting upset about it. I am under a Enuresis clinic who have been no help at all. Please can you tell me the specialist you are going to see in Manchester?

Hi Vicky, you post has made me cry, as I now how it feels. My daughter will be 7 next week and is constantly upset about it. We saw Mr Cervillione in Manchester ( the third consultant that we have seen) I chose him specifically because he had jointly written a research paper on why these problems go undiagnosed for so long, concluding that the right tests aren't being done at the outset. She's had countless ultrasounds which haven't shown anything but apparently will need an MRI if they want to see anything in great detail. He has suggested that we start again, discount what others have said and start at the beginning. He's asked her to drink lots in the day, with nothing after 6pm, to relax when on the toilet and cut out chocolate and fizzy drinks (so far, she's no different) and if we conclude there's no change in 6 weeks, he will take it further. Hi Emma thank you for getting back so quickly - I feel like crying now too! My daughter has not had any ultrasounds yet and been told to increase drinks, and regular trips to toilet. My daughter has has been great at getting on board and been drinking loads but after 3 months this has made no difference. We are due back at the clinic next week so will see what they say but I am not optimistic. I will see how it goes and if no luck will get in touch with your consultant as we are near to Manchester. I wish you all the best with your daughter and hope this consultant will be able to help her (fingers crossed it will be third time lucky!)

HI. I'm interested in whether you have finally got a diagnosis for your little girl? I am currently living this nightmare with my 4 ( soon to be 5 ) year old little girl. I have been going through this for the last 2 1/2 years where nobody seems to take you seriously. She has had a scan on her kidneys-clear, shes been on Oxybutinin liquid ( which has now been discontinued ) for 10 months and shes been on antibiotics (keflexin) for 6 months (it was working, now its not). The drs dont know what other medicines to give her as theyve tried them all. I'm due to see a new consultant from Manchester (at my request ) in November. Unless you are living or have lived this nightmare nobody understands. She's had constant UTI'S. .. you name it, I've tried it.. im running out of options.. xx

Hi Tilly32, my daughter sees a Manchester based consultant and they believe that she had overactive bladder syndrome. She's not had any MRI's or anything as the Drs don't want to do that as the tests that accompany that are too invasive. Whilst her bladder leaks she has never suffered from infections. She is nearly 8 now and the Drs hope that she will grow out of it.., eventually! Good luck with your new consultant x

Tilly and Emma. I have read a lot about this problem and it seems the children will eventually outgrow this overactive bladder syndrome type of problem. They also in some cases have as smaller capacity to hold their bladders. The more the little children worry about this the worse it may get because of anxiety and stress that is on them because of this condition.

Tilly , does your daughter drink cranberry juice and I mean the organic cranberry juice from the health food store. It is very bitter and you can mix it with water and a little juice. Cranberry juice helps ward off UTI infections. Sometimes the infections are caused from children wiping back to front after a bowel movment as well. So check to make sure she is wiping from front to back.  Lots of water too, to flush out the bladder and cranberry juice is a good place to start to avoid as I said UTI.

Do these girls wear pull ups or what do they wear to help keep them dry?

Hello I first want to say I hope everything has worked out for your daughter and that they figured out how to fix the situation. I also wanted to say that I'm going to have them check to see if that is the problem with my daughter. They always told me it was either a yeast infection when she was 5, now she's 12 in 7th grade and has to where pads constantly and is so embarrssed all the time she has to wear them. Doctors say she's probably going to start her menstrual cycle, but this has bern going on since 5 I said. Now she cries herself to sleep, it bugs her so bad. So thank you I'm going to look into this with the doctors and have her looked at right away..
