Cyst/Tumor in Jaw - Front Bottom Gumline

Posted , 4 users are following.

I recently had dental x-rays taken and the dentist noticed a "dark spot" on the X-ray in the gumline of my lower front teeth. It did not have a noticeable border around the dark area. I have been going a lot of *ahem* online research and I have found information about bone cysts in the jaw. I am going to see an oral surgeon in 3 weeks - the waiting is killing me! Has anyone had a jaw bone cyst or tumor? What is the treatment? What was the outcome?

Amanda, All I can say is that they thought I had some kind of cyst once, above an upper molar. In the event, the specialist decided it was just a some kind of wild card. That was 24 years ago and I'm still fine now. I still have the same thing come up on occasional X-rays. Nobody knows what it is, but I figure that if it hasn't got bigger or harmed me in any way in all that time, it can't be too serious!

No guarantee the same will be true for you, but just saying... And don't go on-line looking for stuff - you'll only scare yourself to death!

Come back in three weeks and let us all know what the outcome was.

Hi Lily, like I said to Amanda I have a similar tumor. They are watching mine to see how much it is growing. I was a bit worried but hearing that you hav had yours for 24 years now has calmed me a bit. Do you know how big it was when you found it? And did it just remain the same size all those years? I have another appointment with the specialist next week.

I don't know how big it was, Juli. My dentist showed me the X-ray that first time round, but it was just a diffuse dark area - not delineated at all. As far as I know, it hasn't grown at all since then. I had my last X-ray three months ago and the dentist didn't seem too interested in it!

However, I was never given a name for it, so I don't know if it's the same as yours. From talking to various dentists over the years, I gather that things like this pop up quite often. They need watching but they generally don't do very much. That being said, I'd never advise anyone to ignore anything like this. It needs checking out regularly, at least for the first few years until it's established that it's not growing.

Thanks Lily. I sure hope it's something similar to what you have.

Hi Amanda, my dentist saw one of those on my left jaw as well. He sent me to a specialist who did a biopsy and says that it is benign tumor in my left mandible called fibrous dysplasia. They are watching it to see how fast it is growing. She says that if it is not growing fast they will leave it alone or scrape it down every 2 years. But if it growing quickly, I will need to do an operation where they take the tumor out and replace the lost bone with bone from my hip.

      Hey rafael,

At first, I had a sensitive tooth that felt uncomfortable whenever I bit down on anything and there was a bump or swelling in the gum below the tooth. So the dentist extracted it. Then about 3 years after, I had my finger in my mouth and noticed that the bump was still there. It is painless. Was just uncomfortable when the tooth was there.
