Divericular diagnosis

Hi all. After months of various symptoms, tests, bloods, samples etc, I have been diagnosed with DD. The reason for my post is that I don't think this is what is causing my severe pain. I don't have bloating, I'm very regular and normal, the pain is constant, but not made worse by eating etc, and the pain is in my lower right side, but typically pain is felt in left side with DD according to the research I've done. I can feel a small lump which pops, which made me think I had a hernia. When going for the results of my CT scan, the GP basically read out a list of normals and kind of just slipped in DD. I had to say " excuse me, what was that?". I was then told to eat more fibre, but I already follow a really healthy diet, with loads of fresh fruit and veg daily and I have porridge every morning for brekkie. I asked what else could be done for this constant pain that goes from sore to very painful, to keeping me off work for 4 days, which is unheard of for me. He told me painkillers like cocodamol, but they don't even take the edge off it. I honestly don't think I have any sort of gastro problems, but hey, I'm only a layman.

Sounds terrible and likewise I was given the same information - more fibre!  If it was me I might want to try to see another GP for another opinion who might look at other things though the only way you will have a true DD diagnosis is by having a CT scan and a colonoscopy I'm afraid.  Not pleasant - certainly the before hand bit - but that's how I was finally diagnosed and I believe many others on the site too.

A colonoscopy will confirm whether it's DD.. They found mine that way and it would just come on at any time to start with. It was only when I had my second 5 day stint in hospital that I went on the waiting list for elective surgery.. Taken time to recover, longer than I expected, but my quality of life is so much better. In saying all that I would recommend the colonoscopy as the first step..

You didn't say if you had been seen by gastric team. Sadly My opinion of G P's

is rather low ,I regard them as A Jack of trades  You sh ould ask to be referred to

the gastric specialists .By the way, welcome to the clubsmile

I was diagnosed by CT SCAN when I went for something completely different.  I now see a gastro Dr. and have been set up for my first Colonoscopy.  I was told the same thing and I thought it sounded weird. I was like  "so I eat pretty good and I'm regular but you want me to up my fiber so I go more???" I went on here and asked the same question..lol  The response was yup its the right advice.  Luckily my GP admitted that he wasn't an expert and sent me early on to a specialist. Just waiting on the colonoscopy now.

oops..hit the button too soon.  I also have most of my pain and discomfort on the right side.  There are a small percentage who do.  Some have been misdiagnosed with appendicitis and had them removed only to continue having the symptoms and then finally get diagnosed properly.  I'd ask for a second ..or third opinion if it eases your mind.  Good luck and we're all here to hash it out with when ya need us smile
