Excruciating right flank pain only in early mornings.

Can anybody help me please?

Over the last 5 weeks I have experienced the following symptoms which do not occur every day:

* Excruciating pain below lower right ribcage to lower back only upon waking - sometimes wakes me from 5 am. Cannot do anything to relieve the discomfort. Pain subsides within up to 3 hours.

* Unbearable pain in this area during the few hours after waking when breathing in, especially deeply.

* Wake up shivering, sometimes cannot get warm all day.

* Intermittent breathlessness.

* General feeling of being under weather and tired.

Originally had blood in urine when first episode occurred and was treated then for a UTI.

Recently CAT scan of kidney region came back normal, last urine test was nil for blood/protein etc.

Any advice welcome as I'm quite worried now.

    Hi,

I know this is a Kidneys etc discussion group, but have you had your Gallbladder checked? The pains for gallstones often include excruciating pain under your right ribs, that isn't always there, but when it is it can be very intense, it can also cause breathlessness, the pain may also travel up to your shoulder? And this may be the cause of your chills as well.

I hope you get some answers soon!

    Hi Claire,

I've had the same thing for 3 days except the pain is on both sides. It has woken me up just now and is very painful. Each time it has gone away during the day. I have been feeling ok except for that. Just came on to this website to make an appointment to see the doctor and saw your post.

Hi, just wondering if you got anywhere? I have the same pain in a morning, same thing, starts about 5am and very painful. My pain also travels into my hips and groin and I have blood in my urine but only first thing in the mornings.

Hi Claire, it's been four months since your post and I hope you are still following the discussion as I am keen to hear what you found out about your pain and hopefully a solution.

For the last two weeks have been having the exact same symptoms. It almost felt like I was reading my own record from my doctor appointment.

Hi, my symptoms lasted for approximately 3 months in total. Back and forth to my G.P without any diagnosis. I was referred to the physio who thought it was either kidney stones or reflux - where urine seeps up from the bladder to kidneys during the night. I still have back pain in the mornings but it is a world away from the pain I was getting before. This may not help anyone else who is suffering I'm afraid.

Thanks a lot Claire for your reply. I am seeing an urologist at London Bridge Hospital tomorrow. If any diagnosis can be made, I will write back to you.

    Hello,

I am suffering from the same right flank pain for the last couple of weeks. It started all of a sudden and its worst when I wake up or being woken up due to the pain. Its quite excrutiating and I find my breathing is quite shallow when the pain is at its worst. I am also experiencing stomach discomfort and lot of burping.

I hope you had a diagnosis and now recovered.  I am extremely interested to know more in case it can also help me.

    Thanks

      Hi Tony,

I'm still having some of these symptoms.

Following an MRI on my lumbar region, I've been told I've got minor root nerve irritation, so I'm booked in to see the back specialist at the end of November.

I shall let you know what the results of that appointment is.

      Take care.

    Hello Claire,

I noticed that it's been a while since you last message. Did they end up finding what caused the pain? Was it the root nerve irritation? And was the specialist able to help you? I have exactly the same. I wake up in the morning with a super tight right side. My urine was tested, had an abdominal and pelvic utrasound but they can't find anything. Sometimes I think that the pain is coming from my right ovary. Hope your pain is gone.

Hey Traveller 83, sorry to hear you are suffering, that's not good! Have they carried out blood tests? Mine began last February and is still going on although the pain isn't as severe thank goodness.

I saw the spinal surgeon following on from a lumbar MRI and he said the root nerve irritation isn't causing it.

They found a small ovarian cyst but have ruled that out too.

I've since been referred to the urologist who suspects kidney stones. I've got to have a CT scan with contrast and a flexible cystoscopy.

I'm hoping to find some answers by the end of January.

I hope you get some answers.

      Best wishes,

      Claire.

    Hi Claire,

That sound hopeful. I think they can't always catch everything on an utrasound so it's good that your getting the scan and cystoscopy done. I think that will be my next step as well. I've had a very bad doctor in the past that always told me not to get a scan. She thought the pain was between my ears! Now I do have a good doctor but since i'm currently 4 months pregnant they don't want to do anything which I understand. Still a bit scared, hope the pain is not getting worse as my belly is growing. Ah hope you got some good answers by January. Keep us posted!

but since I'm currently 4 months pregnant they can't do anything.

I had pain on my right side back (around kidney) a year ago. this happen when I played basketball very hard during January. I also have a tiny blood in my urine which is paternal. I think, the pain cause when the weather get cold, and when your muscle around kidney get a little spasm.or when you get a flu then feel better but already affect on your body and still you have virus(which probably dont undrestand)  I am not doctor and dont have knowlege about medical but this is just my experience. When I wrap with bandage around my waist and tight the pain gone. in summer no pain. I spoke with many doctors: some beleives bladder problem, others depression, some the mattress on bed is not good.

I think just cause cold weather beacuse in summer i dont have pain. just rest and dont run anymore for a period of time, also i covered my waste with bandge while i was outside. you should becareful if you cover all time your kidney get weak. so it is better just cover for time you outside in cold weather.

Look into Nephroptosis / Floating Kidney ... it is Rarely Diagnosed Accurately and always takes a Very Long (Painful) amount of Time 😉

I was recently diagnosed after finding the Probable Diagnosis Myself after 6 Years... surgery to correct was 2 weeks ago and I'm Very Pleased to say Symptoms have Disappeared!

Hi Amanda, I actually read a similar post you wrote to someone else suffering with right flank pain. I came across it after googling my symptoms... It's been over a month now since it started, the first week was awful & I had to spend most of it lying down, as it was the only thing that eased the discomfort/pain.

In the second week I went to the doctors, he did a blood & urine test but said their was no sign of infection.

The following 2 weeks I had the occasional pain, lasting only a few hours of the day, & the rest of the time I'm fine!!

This morning I've been awake for a few hours with a crippling pain in both sides (right side worse), which I've had in the past but not so severe, & I've always just put it down to sleeping awkwardly!!

2 days ago I also developed a bladder infection, which I haven't had for about 8 years & before that only once. When I was 16 I had a terrible kidney infection which saw me in hospital in the early hours of the morning.

I went back to the doctor last week & asked for an ultrasound.. I talked about the possibility of the 'floating kidney', but he just laughed at me!! :-/ The ultrasound was clear, & he just suggested I might have air/gas leaking from my intestines, so gave me some tablets for this?! But I feel it was just a guess.

No right flank pain for the last 4-5 days, until this morning :-(

      I'm 30 years old.

Any advice on what tests my doctor should do?? Or do you know of any other conditions it could be?? all I keep finding online is people asking other people, but they are suffering & unaware of what it is too!!

Thank you for your time, Eve.

      Eve,

Did you ever figure out the source of your pain? Are you feeling better?
