Feeling worn out - 5 ops last year

Hi

I've undergone 5 surgeries last year plus a large surgery for my hip in 2013. The first was a excruciating sciatic nerve release from impingement between my pelvis and femur which resulted in nerve damage and excruciating pain. The next ones in 2015 were for diagnosing and then repairing my partially dislocating hips which used a new technique in Australia to stabilize them, then I had ankle surgery to stabilize my ankle and most recently an ITB release, greater trochanter bursectomy and glute repair. I had a 1500ml bleed post op which caused a huge haematoma in my leg which still, 6 months later, causes me pain.

Because my hips had been badly damaged and the muscles have atrophied walking is terribly painful. I use a frame or wheelchair.

I'm 33 and feel very worn out. I cry for days then feel sort of ok. EVERYTHING is hard and painful. I can't do anything that I should be able to do at my age, including showering by myself, cooking, standing, walking except on a frame, I ache all the time especially after walking. I'm just having a winge. I'm so tired of being tired.... I find day to day life hard and it makes me sad I can't socialise, I can't work, I barely see anyone except my parents who I live with and no one wants to hang out with the girl that spends all her energy on sitting up let alone trying to have a conversation. Any tips on how to cope? Mel

Im 20 and have under gone 13 ops in my lifetime. My last op was on Monday and that was a total hip replacement and reconstruction. I have a real hip for the very first time.

But i know exactly you feel. I couldnt walk or do anything before op. I wasnt even allowed to work. I dont know what ill be like after ai have recovered either because i will still have a bad right hip, bad knees and back so i might be in the same position once im healed.

Anyway back to the point. I know how you feel, its awful being so young and not being able to have a normal life. Its even worse feeling restricted by life. Im always here to talk if you even need it as i am on this site all day xx

      Hey hon

Thanks. Just having a ruff time at the moment. May I ask what was wrong with your hips? How are you doing your op?

Yeah it is very rough isnt it. I truely understand.

I was born with congenital hip dysplasia, ended up getting my hip fused but they didnt do it right and i basically ended up with a mess inside me rather than a hip so i neber really had on which caused a lot of mobility and pain issues. X

Sorry I meant how are you doing after your operation?

Hmmm not being mobile really is awful. I had to walk a bit today because I was so stiff and now I ache badly...

Hope you're recovery is going ok. I'm in Australia so bed time now. Take care x

      Oh! Poor thing. Terrible.

Mine was an incident that caused my hips to start dislocating. It was mis diagnosed for 3.5 yrs and I was almost demented with pain as they kept slipping out of the socket... Not fully but I would get this horrid clunk and my leg would spasm like mad and flick around. I was in hospital

in the UK for 7 weeks but they couldn't figure it out so had to return to Australia. I'm fixed now but still have issues.

I know how painful hip surgery is. Take it easy 😊

Oh! I just saw you almost had an accident! It'll just take time to get used to your lovely new hip. I know it's different but it took me ages to trust my surgeries. My family kept asking why I didn't have a hip replacement. Was because my femurs were healthy but very unstable. That's awful about your hip fusion. You'll be a new woman after this recovery phase gets better 😊

Are they putting ice on your hip yet or waiting? Good numbing properties

Ahh i see. Iv lived with these issues all my life so iv kinda of just got used to it and carried on so it must be harder for you if you had had a perfectly normal life before hand. Im really sorry to hear that. Its such a shame .

It baffels me how they missed your issues if they took xrays and stuff. I really just dont understand it xx

Yeah they missed the particular tears on all the MRI's. My ops have never been done before and also not on both hips on the one pt. my femurs have been made so stable they are like concert now. Problem is, now I can't rotate them very far and if I do accidentaly I get terrible pain.

Yeah I get very down. It been very tough, very very painful and beyond exausting. My muscles are so atrophied they just don't work very well. I try to use them all the time but my legs fatigue even over a yr post op and the ache is intense.

Am i supposed to be putting ice on my hips. I came home from hospital on wednesday but the hospital gave me no information at all about recovering, what i can and cant do, no info on my operation and they just werent very helpful at all. The discharge note they sent me home with was disgusting haha.

      Hmmm surprise surprise.

Icing is very good to help with reducing swelling and numbing it a bit but not for too long... Might burn you. Do you get muscle spasms? Some heat will help with that but make sure you leave plenty of time between each. Icing would be best at this stage I think. You are non weight bearing right? Just mobilise very gently for now and your body will tell you when you can increase things.

Sorry, this is probably obvious but wrap your ice pack in two towels. It'll burn you if not. Only a cou

Oh well my leg is still very numb atm from the spinal and general anisthetic haha.

And yeah no weight baring at all for 8 weeks which is a big difference from people recovering from a nornal thr haha x

People who have a standard hip replacement (takes around 90 mins) are usually in 3 days at least. Mine was incredibly difficult and took 7 hours to complete and i was only in 2 nights haa xx

Oh yeah... If you're still numb wait till you have full feeling before heat and ice 😊

Poor thing. Rough operation. Yeah very different to normal THR.

    • Posted

Yeah I don't get that. Were you discharged too early? I would have thought you would need full feeling back to assess your pain levels prior to discharge
    • Posted

I probably was discharged to early tbh. But the nurses didnt give a sh*t. I kept asking for things and they would never bring it like pain meds and stuff, and if you rang the buzzer it took them like 20/30 mins to come to you

Oh honey. I know. If you don't feel right at all, go straight back but see how you go. Do you have feeling yet?

Leg still feels abit numb to touch but tbh thats probably normal consideri what it went through
