getting an erection.

This is very basic and rather embarrassing given that I am way beyond my youth. The problem is that I can not control unwanted erections. It could be at the doctors or during one of my many stays in hospital. I am not talking about full blown pleased to see you erections but more that just a hint. It can prove to be very awkward at times, I am not an oddball of any kind and I do not get pleasure from this. Please can anybody explain what is going on and let me know how to prevent it ? Thinking about something horrible does not do the trick. Cheers.

I would like to encourage you to not give this much concern. Although I understand you're embarasment and awkward feelings, I'm sure it's rather normal. It's just something we don't generally talk about. When was the last time anyone you knew told you he was getting erections at awkward times? I did ask friends on mine that are in the medical and massage fields, and they all said it happens, just don't get sideways about it. Your penis is simply doing what it is supposed to do. I think your 'issue' is rather better that having a penis that is so shy it practically disappears when exposed, leaving those around you feeling sorry for your wife or girlfriend. smile My advice, relax and wear it well...

Thanks for the reply. I agree that this is a natural thing but why is it that I am not able to control it. I had a visist from social services this week to assess my daily living needs, one of the outcomes is to be assisted bathing and dressing. If this problem was to happen in this situation could I not end up in trouble, could it not be considered a lude act ? I dont get fully blown ready to explode so to speak but it is more than just noticable. I am genuinly worried frightened so much so I am considering refusing the help on offer.

As jorock says, this is pretty much normal, though it affects some people more than others, and may go away as you get older.  I used to know someone who worked on a ward with spinal injuries, and had to help them urinate, and she said it happened all the time.  It was mostly young men in there because of motorbike accidents, or diving in the sea and hitting a sand bar (this was in Australia), and they used to joke about how much they were enjoying it, but the sad truth was that they couldn't feel anything down there.

If you explain the potential problem beforehand, I think they'll understand.  As far as preventing it, the only thing I could suggest is, if possible, to masturbate an hour or two before you're in a difficult situation - a so-called "safety wank".  This tactic is famous from the film "There's Something about Mary".

In your position, I'd probably be embarrassed too, but I most definitely would not refuse the help on offer.

Thanks for that, I agree it is very natural. I will attemot to discuss with my carer. As for stopping when I am older , I'm 51 now not exactly a spring chicken. Cheers Ed

      Ed,

i would really like to emphasize to you to not refer to this a 'your problem'. As we all agree, erections are perfectly normal, and if you can find a way, simply allow your body to be 'normal'. Perhaps your over awareness of your body's reactions are helping it to happen. it's like telling someone to not think about an elephant, it becomes all they think about. In your case, the elephant is an erection. Enjoy the fact that you are a very healthy male in this respect. And rest assured, anyone in the business of bathing and dressing men is already prepared to deal with seeing an erection. As for masturbating beforehand to minimize the potential, hmmm, who amoung us really needs a reason to justify masturbating? Just sayin...smile

I'm also 51, and while I'm very happy with my equipment, I wouldn't get a spontaneous erection in those circumstances any more, no matter how attractive the nurse, doctor or carer, so I have to say I'm a little jealous...

No it is not a pleasurable experience. And further more it doesnt seem to mind a female or male doctor, it doesnt happen all of the time but more often than not. I was hoping there would an anti viagra pill.

You are right the more i try to fight it thr more obvious it becomes. It's mind over matter which is very easy to say but not so easy to perfect. The annoying twist to this is if I wanted to get an erection on demand , more often than not I would fail.
