Glue Ear and ear pain

Hi everyone.

I have always had trouble with my ears since having grommits at the age of 6. 

Im an ex flight crew member and I dont know if this has damaged my ears further but to cut a long story short I was diagnosed with a brain condition 4 months ago which also showed sinusitis. 

I have alsi been suffering with lots of ear pain which actually feels like an ear infection.

I went to the doctors on monday and he told me I had fluid behind my ear and that my eardrum looked a dull colour.

He said there wasn't any sign of infextion (not sure how he can tell this) especially if I am suffering with  sinus infection.

He told me he cant help me so I have asked to see an ENT SPECIALIST.

Is there anything I can do now as I am in agorny and feeling low and worried about it as I have read loads about things going wrong in the head due to infection.

Has anyone found that if they are infact in discomfort you may recieve an urgent appointment somewhere?

    Hi Louise, don't worry. Having fluid behind your ear is very normal. Millions of children experience it on any given day. The way the doctor can see that it isn't infected is because it would appear clear. Like looking at a glass of water. If it was infected he would see redness around the ear canal, ear drum or blood and coloured pus behind your ear drum. The problem you are having is the same as when you were little. Your eustachian tube isn't able to let air go from the back of your nose to your middle ear, probably because of the sinus infection. If your adenoids and sinuses are enlarged or discharging, they can block the eustachian tube. I promise you it is about the best thing you can suffer with. It definitely can't affect your head in any way and nothing can go wrong. Fluid behind the ear drum causes a lot of pain. If pain killers aren't helping go to the emergency department or another doctor. Preferrably someone with a lot of experience. I would phone the ENT and tell them you are in agony. They can pierce your ear drum to release the fluid (which is what a grommet does), or get you started on medical intervention that can help with the pain. Whatever you do don't worry. It's painful but can't hurt you seriously. Keep gently blowing your nose and take anti inflammatories to decrease swelling in your nose/sinuses. I hope you feel better soon. x

    Hi, what brain condition were u diagnosed with? Do u suffer balance issues with it too?

      It's called a Chiari malformation type one I suffer with balance issues that could be my ear or my head both glue ear and Chiari cause this x
