Glue in

I have suffered Glue Ear since the early 1980's.  I had several perforations.  In 1994 at the age of 47 it was so bad I end up having pneumococcal bacterial meningitis due to the bacteria from the inner ear reaching my brain.  Unfortunately, I lost the sight in my left eye.  I suffer with Chronic Rhinitis/Sinusitis.  I use a steriod based nasal drops, and antihistamines daily.  I see my ENT consultant twice yearly.  Recently he used Aural toilet (including microsuction and/or suction of exteriorised mastiod cavity)  The ear felt wonderful for the first five days, but has filled up yet again.  I have been using Clarithromycin antibiotics, and ear drops....nothing seems to work.  Having had meningitis due to this problem I always safe guard myself by taking regular courses of antibiotics.  I do suffer post nasal drip due to sinus issues and wonder if the mucus is seeping into the eustachian tube, that I've been told is dysfunctional.  I really am beginning to think there is no answer to this problem.  I even recently had allergy testing and all came back negative.  However, I'm convinced something is aggrivating my problem, but what is anyone's guess !!

Hi Carole. Can you tell us how your visit went with Dr. Poe? I hear he is wonderful and does the balloon dialation in the euatachian tube. He's taking appointments a year out from now, so he is very popular! I'm hoping to see Dr. Marc Dean in Texas soon, he trained under Dr. Poe. Anne, Marlene, Carole you al can friend me on Facebook too my name is Megan Montgomery Sykes from USA. I have very similar problems!

Sorry Carole, I have only just recived your message.  Marlene ask to be friends on face book to discuss this situation privately.  I've only just seen your message via my e-mail address.  If you're on f/b would you like to discuss this on there ?  Just to add, yes I so sinus rinses, however, it says on the box if there is a perforation in the eardrum, don't use.  I also find it does sometimes block my ear.  I paid £100 for the EarPopper, that was useless.  I am currently under an ENT consultant with whom I see twice yearly.  Only last Friday 23/10/16 I had to have microsuction to clear the mucus blocking my left ear.....this procedure has been done three times already this year.  I do get anxious still suffering this complaint after so many years, with it causing me to contract Pnuemococcal Bacterial Meningitis back in 1994.  Hard to believe I'm still suffering.  I suffer severe sinus issues and some allergies.  However, recent allergy testing all 12 of the allergens came back negative.  I know I'm allergic to something, as once I take an antihistamine I find it helps.  When my ears become unbearable, I'm prescribed Prednisolone steriod tablets that dry up all the mucus and the inflammation, I also regain my sense of smell and taste.  Better to have a reducing method with these tablets, as short courses aren't enough, recommend 2/3 week course.  Ear feels wonderful for a fews months until it all builds back up again.  Unfortunately, I lost the sight in my left eye and slight hearing problems too due to the meningitis, plus vertigo when lying on my right side at night in bed, but consider myself lucky to be alive.  I would always recommend a course of antibiotics to kill any potential bacteria that  may be present....always have a pack by me.  I really hope this helps.  I've had three perforations in my left eardrum this year....or maybe the hole never healed over.  My friend recommended I drink loads of water during the day to try and thin the mucus to allow it to drain.  I did this yesterday and have woken up this morning and so far left ear feels good....not holding my breath though !!  I too will have to try and change my diet.  I have never drunk or smoked, but do like chocolate, I guess that should stop as it's diary.  If you're are on face book you'll find me under Anne Westover in England.  Kind regards.

I can relate to eye issues and ear problems. I am new to the ear popping when i swallow. Its maddening and im trying to accept it so i dont go batty. Lord knows the eye stuff is hard enough. I had an eye stroke, have optic nerve pallor and they are watchung my inner angles now. Been a few years so far. Said from some virus i had at some time. Science says that doesnt regenerate. Who knows if thats true or not, they are working in it. Maybe they will learn this very soon.  Anyway I have no advice but want to say i know this all sucks, its very unfair and hard.

My confusion is in specialists..they seem not more knowledgable the. Anyone else. Im so tired of reading about pretend medical breakthouroughs. I dont see them. My doc says lots of time and the body can and does heal ear stuff. I had bmt tubes twice back in 2007 and he feels no more for that. Its hard in the ears and isnt permament anyway.

I hope anyone who has stuff like we do heals really fast. Somehow just heals and blessed with a lot of stregnth and courage. It feels lonely. No one wants to hear the same thing over and over. Meaning family memebers. I understand there are things you have to accept and live with but getting to that place is a hard road.

Im dissapointed in science, the medical world and specialists.

    Hi Anne

I don't think my problem was anything as bad as yours.  I just had a ear infection brought on by the flu.  After 2 rounds of antibiotics and 2 rounds of penicilin there was no improvement in my deathness, popping, crackle, etc.

I saw my doctor when I started coughing up green stuff again.  He put a musical tuning fork (don't know what note) in the centre of my forehead and I could hear it as clear as a bell.  Within seconds I was swallowing yucky stuff.  My ears continued to drain for the next 8 hours with 2 major mouthfulls and 2 very significant dizzy spells.  Today I tried finding any info on sound waves clearing fluid build up and didn't find a thing.  My bad ear isn't all better but I would say 80% cleared.  I have ordered my own tuning fork and will treat myself again when it turns up next week.

Hope this can help you and I wish my doc had tried it weeks ago.

Thank you for that piece of information and will mention it to my ENT consultant when I see him next week.  I continue to have this problem

and learning to live with it.  However, I aways ask for antibotics in case

it should turn nasty again....no a infection should be left untreated.
