Headaches AFTER period finishes

Hello. So, for the past 3-4 months I have noticed I am getting tension-style headaches for about 5-7 days either during or after my period finishes. I don't think they are migraines because I seem to be able to function with them, even though they make me feel miserable. They stick with me throughout an entire day and I tend to wake up with one. I've also noticed that my anxiety is heightened after my period, and I feel quite low and sad and I can't use my head to think it just feels like "brain fog". It may be worth mentioning that I have had some tight spots in my neck. (I know that can cause headaches). Can anyone relate to this at all? Or do you think this could be something more serious? I find it extremely difficult to get any answers out of my doctors and I'd LOVE to figure out how to make it all stop or to avoid the headaches at least. I can deal with the emotional side, but physical pain debilitates me. Thank so much for helping!!

Hi ellie69, have you been to doctors about it? How long have you dealt with week long headaches?? I just feel so scared by it because it's new to me I've never experienced anything after my period...

Hi there meggsy194, any luck with the headache issue? I am the same and recently took a ferritin iron test which came back very low at 9, this can cause headaches especially if your period is heavy, you will be losing a lot of iron. Normal blood tests normally show just iron serum, make sure your ferritin is also tested xx

Hi cheryl03531, no luck on the headache issue. Since my post, my headaches have deminshed slightly. In fact, my last cycle I did not have one single noticeable headache. I did see my GP, she couldn't give me a direct answer, which is understandable because my symptoms cover a whole umberella of conditions/problems, however I did mention the ferritin, and it was only slightly low, she said I could take iron supplements before and during my period to see if that would work, however she also noted that my iron levels weren't low to the point I should have symptoms. I didn't notice I difference taking iron. I'm not sure why the Headaches have gotten slightly better, I have no idea if they will return, I have no idea if it was just one of those weird once off health issues, and importantly I have absolutely no clue why they were/are happening. I haven't done anything "positive" or "negative" to my diet and lifestyle, it has mostly stayed the same. I have a host of other weird health issues I seem to suffer on a regular basis, but they're just too vague for a GP to take any real concern or notice. Which I understand.

Hi, so i was diagnosed with PCOD a couple of years back. It's not very extreme, its just at an early stage. But this year i didn't get my periods from JAN to JUNE. (i didn't take any medication for it either) I have been getting headaches since the past 3 months from the time my periods started again and i have realised i get it once my periods are over and it lasts for around 20 days. So from july until now, every time my period got over i had a headache for about 20 days. It's really getting difficult for me because the doctors are not able to understand what it is. And its kind of getting impossible to live with so much pain every day. I barely get relief for a week every month. I also have a stiff neck as you mentioned too. I have also gained 6 kgs. But thats also because i have had zero physical activity since May because of a leg injury.

It would be great if you could share if there has been any changes in your lifestyle or medication that has helped you get through it.

My GP has prescribed me a migraine tablet to have for a month inorder to diagnose. I am not very keen on doing so.

I have suffered migraines for almost 10years now .. I don’t know why they started .. it’s always only the left side of my body .. cluster migraines I suffer.

I have half a thyroid, left side gone, GP has always said normal levels.  I’ve got attrial fibrillation in my heart also. I have helibactor Pylori too, antibiotics do not rid of it. I’m on a wait list to see specialist about it.

My periods in the last few months to a year have been so heavy it just pours out for 24-48hrs then stops. There’s definitely an imbalance, I just put up with them usually, they can go for days and days, any information that could help is much appreciated.
