Help!! My mom is going blind.

I'm Emmanuel by name, from Nigeria. I was searching through the internet with reference to Glaucoma when I came across this forum.

I have a 68year old mother who has glaucoma. Optometrist we met for diagnosis authenticated that yes she has the disease. Last medical check we did at a different eye clinic 8th December 2016, showed that the pressure rate of her left eye was 44 and right eye was 45, which happens to be way above normal. Blood pressure reading was 110/70, sugar level was 106.

Optometrist with no form of sympathy in his speech, plainly and clearly told my mom she would go blind, and those words made my old mom burst into and uncontrollable tears, she cried bitterly. I had to console her, watching as the tears flowed from my old mother's eyes broke me down completely, but had to hold up my own tears.

Just yesterday at a visit to an eye clinic, it was discovered that her left eye was gone, she only sees with it by the side and not straightways.

Experts in the treatment of glaucoma, permit me to ask that with her above diagnosis, what would you recommend to help lower her IOP and save her remaining vision?

She currently uses Bimopress eye drops and Optic nerve tablets.

Do have a great day while I kindly await prompt responses.

Happy New Year all.

God bless you all.

To lower her eye pressure immediately she would need laser treatments and then eye drops.

Thanks for your prompt response. Quite sad that the laser treatment you suggested is not available in my state. Moreover, we cannot afford the fee to carry out such treatment. If only you could please suggest eye drops to help lower the pressure, that I can afford. I am a struggling student. Thanks

Betaxalol and Travatan Z. Both are generic and affordable. With 40 IOP it might not be too late and worth a try, Good luck.

Thank you so very much for your immense assistance, I greatly appreciate. What might the dosage be? I already bought her Xalatan just yesterday and looking to buy Pilocarpine, which the Optometrist prescribed.

Your mother's condition is now at the point where she needs an opthalmologist not an optometrist.

I'm entirely confused right now. I need God's grace to hold on.

Difficult to find an Opthalmologist. We only got Optometrist and Opticians all around us here.

Brimopress eye drops are to bring down the pressure in your Mum's eyes. These must be used as directed, with no missed days.   Any sight that has been lost is usually not curable.   Apart from drops, the next step is usually a trabeculectomy by either surgery or laser. What is the name of the optic nerve medication.

Thanks for your care and concern, I greatly appreciate.

I'm afraid the Brimopress didn't work. Optic nerve formula is the name of the medication. It's a capsule.

I cannot afford the trabeculectomy surgery. I contacted two Indian specialist hospitals and the surgery fee per eye is way beyond our capacity. Only option is to settle for the eye drops.

I have all the sympathies with you who is running so hard to help your mother. May God Almighty help you. There are various eye drops to lower the eye pressure. Every eye drop does not suit every patient. One has to give a try to another eye drop if one does not work. But it should always be done with advice of the Doc; Opthalmologist if available there.

You say that left eye is gone though side vision is still there not the central vision. This can be a symptom of AMD (age related macular degeneration) for which eye vitamins can be helpful.

i have early Glaucoma and early dry AMD for which I have been struggling for the last one year. There are many eye drops for Glaucoma which I have tried. I am presently taking Travatan once a day in the evening and Azopt twice a day. Another eye drops which suited me most and brought my IOP from 23 each eye to 12 each eye in a months time but I had to leave it as it brought my heart rate down. Its generic name is Dorzolamide 2% + Timlol 0.5%.

Anyway I will suggest to remain calm and proceed with the treatment in consultation with a suitable eye Doc. Again I wish/pray for you and your mother.   Good luck
