Herniated disc

I have posted on here before but have a large herniation at L4. I haven`t been to any surgeon and do not want surgery. I am 60 and have other problems. I am also slim and was extremely active until 3 mths ago. I refuse to take painkillers as they do not work and not keen on other medication. Having being seein a Physio I now stretch for an hr a day walk 2 miles every morning use ice and a tens machine, I can sleep as use a body pillow but I can`t drive and the pain restricts what I can do would spinal injections help. I have pain in my back, in my hip, shin big toe and 3 other toes are numb. I also get pain in the opposite side and numb toes, have been told that is ok. I read people have much bigger problems than me but to me these are big problems.

HI as I read your post I'm lying in hospital after having bilateral l4l5 microdiskectomy I must say so far so good pain in back has been controlled by painkillers up and walking all pre op leg pain numbness gone for now! Surgeon says his happy! for me surgery had to happen I had been suffering for a year gradually getting worse to the point I gave up work as nurse! And stop working out apart from core exercises, However I was managing around the house with my 2 toddlers but could not take them out to park walk jump around etc so it was a hard desision to have surgery! As I was not as bad as some people I have read about. However now it's done I think it was the right 1 so does surgon. So I'm just saying really it's a quality of life issue if u r happy having a restricted life style and living with a little pain that's really great but for me I'm 30 and was not happy hope u find some permanent relief soon but if not surgery so far! Has not been as bad as expected 😊

Sounds like you have tried it all. I had it after 2 years of living like half a person that I was. Couldn't even tie my shoes.

See a spinal specialist & if necessary go to many as you can tell them you have tried it all. There is a way to repair the disc. Ask a spinal specialist that specialists repairs the disc by sealing the leak, bulging disk which is causing the jelly like tissue to leak out the broken Outer layer in the disc causing pain on the nerves in the back. Only sealing the disc can treat the pain. And believe me you will feel the difference the very same day. I guarantee you will be able to tie your shoes the very same day and no more debilitating pain.

    Hopexxxx

Hi, do know what the term or this technique is called please? The sealing of the disc? I'd like to find out about this as my disc has tears which are leaking onto my nerves causing pain without compression. Thanks, glad you've found relief and hopefully something here will help original poster in finding relief too.

Ask for entanercept. It's an injection bio drug. It helps reduce the jelly like tissue leaking from the disc causing the pain . See you tube demo etanercept injection in back for disc pain.

Spinal block doses not work for everyone if it dose the relief may only be temporary. You arnt supposed to have more than 3 a year. I've had 2 one about 5 year ago which made me quite poorly and didn't work. I was down having an emergency decompression discectomy 6 month after. Then Nov last year I had another. Ended up in hospital for 5 days with a fever, safe to say no more andiy didn't work for me. I am now awaiting another decompression discectomy and spinal fusion. Not by choice, is much rather not been operated on but my mobility is terrible my quality of life is terrible. Whe surgery is not a guarantee I've tried many none invasive treatment s. With very little success. Some times and op is the only wAy forward. Hope I get some relief and help , keep us updated good luck

Thank you Jessica I have read your posts and really hope you will finally get some relief. I have really abused my back and now at 60 am paying for it. I really feel for anyone younger as I know how bad it is for me what it must be like for a younger person I can`t imagine. Had a really bad week last week but today have walked 2 miles and only had to stop once. I not stupid enough to think I am on the mend as tomorrow it could all be back again.

Sorry to hear about your problems.

I couldn't stand the leg pain any longer and was absolutely delighted to have the Microdisectomy. With immediate pain relief, an excellent physio therapy plan and a few weeks patience, I am now in a much better place.

Injections were offered, but the MRI scan showed a significant prolapse, I didn't see the point.
