Hiatus Hernia - Dr has told me to lose 2-3 stone before he will operate, anyone else been told this?

Hi I have a 6cm Hiatus Hernia and have been put on the waiting list to have it removed however, my specialist has told me that he will only operate if I lose weight and quite brutality told me that I must lose at least 2-3 stone in at least 3 months times!

I do need to lose weight and I'm fine with that however, I struggle to lose weight easily and wondered if anyone, with the same exprience has managed to do it and how?!

Thanks

Standard practice now and also to stop smoking. Have they offered you help to lose weight?

Which procedure have you been offered as you do not actually remove a hiatus hernia ?

Hi it's The fundoplication operation. The specialist told me he couldn't offer me any advice (most helpful..NOT!) but I spoke to my doctor who has given me orlistat to lose weight along with advice of HIIT training. Are you in the U.K.? Here they remove them if the patient under goes certain tests to determine if you can have the removal. I have been given the go ahead to remove mine.

Yes, I'm in the UK and have had a hiatal hernia for over 30 years.

Google fundoplication to see what they do.

There are newer alternatives to fundoplication

With your wonderful health care system in the UK, can't your surgeon refer you to a dietician to give you the tools needed to help you lose weight?  If not, go on line and find info on the South Beach diet or the Mediterranean diet.  Just reduce your carbohydrate intake and increase your protein.  Don't eat anything white....no bread, potatoe or rice.

If you do this, you will lose weight.

Thanks. I have been given Orlistat as I have a high BMI (I am 2-3 stone over weight anyway) and advised to do HIIT training. The only problem is it's not something I can crack on with so easily given how unfit I am and have to ease myself in gently so my weight loss, I see, will not be easy to do in the timeframe I have been given. I tried the KETO diet but my dr strongly advised me against it as it tells you to eat fats and that's something I have to avoid on the tablets. What a nightmare! Thanks for your advise though x

Just start walking. Do a little more everyday.  First 15 minutes.  The next day 20 minutes and so on.  Eating fats is ridiculous.  Eat vegetables and meats.  No white stuff which includes any kind of sugar.  Limit your fruit intake as well.  With this diet you will lose weight.  No more excuses....just do it.  I do understand it is difficult but if you take baby steps and know each day you will do a little better it will help.  Allow yourself to eat a little bit of the white stuff on Sunday as long as you are losing weight on the other days.

Do you swim? That is good exercise and helps to lose a bit of weight.

No I haven't lost but 2 lbs I'm in to much pain to exercise he wants me to drink protein drinks 2 a day 1 for breakfast and 1 for dinner and eat a lunch because he said the protein shakes will shrink the liver because he has to lift the liver to get to the stomach I don't eat much because it makes my stomach hurt so bad but when you can't bend over or exercise how do you lose weight I'm also seeing a pain management dr for hip pain and it go's down my leg so I can't ever go to physical therapy because of the hernia I'm praying every thing will work out I use to go for walks with my husband and I haven't been able to do that for over a yr and a half looking forward to doing that again and I need to lose 40 lbs do you no when your surgery is...surgeons don't have much bedside manners but thats probably because they have to deal with so much bs from there patients and there tired of us that  want answers ...lol but things are going to get better I'm praying

Oh no poor you Tammy, I'm sorry to hear all of this. Yes my surgeon said the same about the liver. He said I am on the waiting list so could be around 3 months. I have just bought myself a wii fit in hope I can do that too as I need to do High Intensity Training. My Dr has also given me Orlistat but this isn't very effective as I dont really eat fatty foods. Its so hard and it makes me really really depressed. My chest hurts the minute I do any exercise and it really is a vicious circle.
