Has anyone had an op for hiatus hernia to help cure a persistent cough caused by acid reflux and was it successful?

    Hi Louise,

The chronic cough was my worst symptom of extra-oesophageal reflux, which originates as gastro-oesophageal reflux exacerbated by hiatus hernia.

I had been offered a fundoplication in 1994 but it would have been by open surgery and I was too scared. I was eventually deperate enough in 2007 to have risked anything.

I eventually had Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication in 2008 and it was the best thing I ever did. (You can read my blog of that on my own website, ChrisRob co uk, by selecting the Barrett's tab. The page contents shows my account of the operation as item 7.)

Unfortunately, following 5 hours violent retching from norovirus, the wrap loosened and I had it repaired in 2014.

Thank you for your reply it really helps to know that the op can be successful so fingers crossed. I have read the piece on your site and after your op sounds just like it was for me after having my gallbladder out. Surgery is the last resort as I have tried everything and can't go on like this.

Hi Ian, I had the op done just over a year ago - I have not had indigestion since. My last anti-acid tablet was taken on the morning of my operation - and I haven't had to take any since! You may find your shoulders are very sore post op - but it wears off after a few hours - best advice I can give is walk as soon as you can, you will be given painkillers too - and you will need them, but it's only a few days of discomfort in the grand scheme of things!

I had a toupet wrap so its a bit looser than a full nissen wrap. I had soggy weetabix the morning after my operation. I ate sloppy foods for the first couple of weeks and gradually progressed to normal food in about 8 weeks. I ate lots of mashed potato with gravy followed by custard! You will find at about 10 days post op you may feel that you cant swallow as well, but thats just the height of the swelling and it eases off. Good luck with your op!

    Hi Louise,

I had your problem - constantly coughing - had a troupet fundoplication done just over a year ago, keyhole surgery - and have not looked back. The cough has gone - and I have not had indigestion since. You may find discomfort around the area where the wrap is done - but for me that is not often - and it is in my view well worth the recovery time. I was only in hospital overnight - had 3 weeks off work - and a diet I had to follow for a few weeks post-op - but am now able to eat what I want when I want. Good luck!

Hi Louise I had the op last Wednesday I had a partial wrap as my osophagus is weak I came home yesterday had four nights in hospital. Had weatabix morning after the op jelly ice cream and sloppy food. On a whole I've felt good swallowing hasn't been to bad most of the time. Still having pain unbearable at time's thank god for pain killers it's going to br a long road I'm frustrated at the moment having no energy getting tired after a couple of minute's shuffling can't really call it walking yet lol. When the doctor told me to stop taking my ppi's and that the operation was a success I cried a little to hear those words made it all worth it. I've had no issues with going to the toilet to much yet as some have reported I did have massive amounts of pain with wind but once things started moving the relief was amazing not sure the nurse's felt the same lol. As of now I'm very glad my nerves didn't get the best of me and I went through with its was deffently a move for the better :-) .

      Hi Ian

Thank you for updating me and I am glad the op went well. I hope you make a speedy recovery. Unfortunately my next appointment isn't until July which is another three month wait but they are trying to at least get me to speak to my surgeon before then. I just want to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel as even swallowing food this week has become really painful.

Hi Ian, I hope your recovery is going well. I have had my appointment brought forward now to 25th May so I am hoping I will start to see a light at the end of the tunnel. This has been going on for 8 years for me as I was just fobbed off at the beginning. It took me being brought into hospital 3 times (discharged twice) for someone to listen to me - i had an infected gallbladder which has now been removed but from now on I have rang anyone and everyone to make sure I am listened to. It is ridiculous how much has been wasted on repeat tests for the same thing. No one understands what you are going through and have always felt like a hypercondriac and it is always good to know that you are not the only one going through this. Fingers crossed 8 years down the line something will be done.
