Hi all. I have had these abscess' since I was 16 (29 now). Dr's kept prescribing Tetracycline and I had it for many years to no avail. For years now I get them in huge swollen PAINFUL clusters and I just wish it would go away forever sad My Dr has had me on Doxycycline for 3 mos now..still no avail so yesterday she said I have Folliculitis and referred me to a plastic surgeon. I came home and started researching it and I was like "What in the world? Mine do not look like little pimples all over the place, mine are huge cysts". Upon my research I found that Folliculitis is commonly misdiagnosed and the patient may have HS. So I started researching HS and the pictures look exactly like mine! So I have an appt on Monday and I am going to print out my findings and have her diagnose it correctly so when I go see the surgeon it will be on my paperwork and don't have to go through another diagnosis and all that hooblah. I am terrified of this plastic surgery idea. Is the scarring as bad as the images on google? I will be having the surgery on both armpits, both inner thighs, both sides of my groin and buttocks. Is the recovery as horrifying as I am making it out to be? I have a toddler and a 9yo and I am kind of freaking out about surgery :-/

Hello, I have recently been diagnosed with HS and I have exactly the same as what you described.  I started with it when I was a teenager too but the doctors and hospitals didn't know what it was.  I also had tetrayline for over a year and it didn't work, I am now on doyxyclcine too and had to wait more than 3 months for them to kick in, I don't know about you but when I get them it hurts to work so it's best to get rid of them if possible.  I would keep on the tablets and use bio oil to try and get rid of the scars.  No one has mentioned plastic surgery to me to get rid of all my scars, how did it go, did it work and was it painful?

      Hello Nat

I am sorry to say that even now I have been under a dermatologyist consultant and skin specialists at my doctors mine still isn't under control, they gave me some tropical treatment to apply to the affected areas but it didn't work and the doxycycline is not working anymore and it is hard to go on holiday when you can't go out in the sun without burning because of the antibiotics in your system.  Therefore I have decided to stop taking them as it's not prevented me from having flare ups and like you have had them all over and really had to self medicate most of the time.  I am not trying to change my diet following advice from on here and see if that makes any difference

Hello Helen well I'm allergic to the sun anyhoo so I might be able to take that medicine at this point I just would like to see the doctors try to help even if it doesn't work especially after 26years would be nice for them to even try and diagnose it I'm the one whom did all the research the dermatologist didn't even try and were I live we don't have one here he only comes to town a few times a year took me four years of researching to finally have a name to call what was happening to me and from what I have learned at this advanced stage there is only surgery cuz I have been on antibiotics antibacterial soap and antibacterial creams to apply all at same time with no results whats so ever if they are even going to consider surgery because it is not life threatening they probably won't I am so discouraged this has affected my work life my romantic relationships my self esteem as well as my physical health at times but dispite everything I refuse to give up hope on a solution

Hello, I've been reading these posts with interest, although I don't have the condition myself.I was wondering -  if you have tried everything, and nothing seems to help, have you considered alternative therapies? I was thinking of homeopathy. I was treated for a condition, and it did work - at the time, like you, I'd been to every doctor, and had every pill, but at that point if someone had told me to run round a tree naked at full moon, to effect a cure, I would have done it!

You have nothing to lose, and if it could even just lessen your symptoms, it might bring you some relief. Hope you don't think me intrusive, it's a long shot, but it might help.

Hi, that's exactly how I was diagnosed! I printed everything on HS out and brought it to my doctor. I had surgery on both armpits and on both panty lines on Thurday. It was a plastic surgeon in NY who did it. The only one I could find here who was familiar with HS and has done surgery on it in the past. I have stitches now, but he missed one on my panty line! I have no clue how he missed it, it was clearly circled with magic marker. I'm seeing him on Monday for a follow up. As painful as the surgery was, I'm hoping that at least the one really bad one that I had on my left panty line will be gone for good. That was huge, painful and always draining something. It also had visible tracks that actually looked like train tracks. I'm worried about what the scars will look like, but it's got to be better than that. I'll post as I go along and let you know my results.
