I've eaten something that's causing pain - chooses below- what is it?

Hi guys,

I'm really struggling with my IBS and pain.

I'm trying to figure out what it is that's causing me pain.

I've done a food elimination but still can't find what it is.

Dr is useless!

Today i ate

Quinoa salad with peas, brocolli, parsley, feta cheese and a teaspoon of ricotta.

I had some kinda cramps whilst eating it.

Then after that i had a health bar  I made : Dates, Almonds and Raisins with a banana - all blended and turned into bars.

Anyway an hour later I was walking and suddenly I was bending over in so much pain.

My upper abdomen was cramping like crazy and it really hurt.

What food from the list could cause that?

I'm perplexed by this annoying disorder!

I've cut out coffee, bread, (although I had bread this morning for breakfast) - not sure if that could be it.

I"m so over it - I just want to know what food to NOT eat!

Thanks for your help.

I can feel my gut is really sensitive now and I"m scared to eat anything.

Have you tried fodmap? I'm on it at the minute, so can't eat brocolli, peas, feta, dates or raisins. By cutting high FODMAP foods from my diet, I'm 3 weeks symptom free xxx

If the FODMAP diet is going to work for you then you must take it seriouisly.   If you say no bread except for the slice at breakfast you will never know if the FODMAP diet works for you.

I still drink decaf coffee and tea.    I use lactose free milk in them

I have found that if I try something and it doesn't affect me then I eat too much of it and get a bad reaction.  For example I found a marmalade that didn't affect me.   I went out and bought a dozen jars and enjoyed it three times a day with cheese on my rice cakes.     I started getting mild (but annoying) symptoms again but didn't associaate them with the marmalade until I went on Holiday for a week and forgot my marmalade  -  no symptoms JOY but now I have to cut out this m,armaladel and reintroduce it at a very low level.

The point of the story is that you need to be absolutely strict and then reintroduce in small steps always keeping track of what you are doing.   The FODMAP diet is not easy but its a lot better than the alternatives.    BUT if you dont do it thoroughly you might never find the diet that your body is happy with so you will suffer from your monster for years.

I hope you are one of the lucky ones that it works for.

Love the marmalade story! You are so right though. You find a food that works, eat it daily, next thing you know you have an intolerance to it.i never used to take any notice of tge boffins advice to vary your food daily. I now know the quickest way to become intolerant is to eat the same stuff daily! Recently proved it by having another IgG 93 panel sensitivity test. Amazed to find that things I used to have problems with were now reading OK. Naturapath said this is normal and that I could have those foods occassionally with no problems. It all just gets so complicated Graham!

I have tried FODMAP...every diet out there...now I am starting to believe it is FIBER that is causing the issue. I stopped fiber on Tuesday and have not had gas or bloating since Wednesday. I have to believe there is something to it. I feel I am still in the experimental stages but having no gas or bloating is SUCH a huge relief...!

The more complex a fibre the more your stomach has to work to break it down. Ibs gets aggravated by this. I use a centrifugal juicer which takes out the complex fibres but keeps the easy to digest fibres in. My Ibs specialist said he is the only Dr in the hospital that will tell you eating healthier will make you worse.

even me too,I do have stomach pains and cramps most times I take fruits, but this is the supposedly healthy food for the body how come its now otherwise??

David - I have found there are two types of fibre - soluble an insoluble. The latter could be the one causing you grief as it can take longer to pass thru but the kicker is it can then start to ferment causing hydrogen and methane gas. Great to hear you have had a win but how are you going to manage stopping all gibre!

Hi - apparently it is the sugar in fruits that can also cause grief in a dicky tummy. It took me years to cotton onto this - pretty thick! On a diet at present with only a lemon and lime a day are allowed. This seems to be working but I used to start the day with an all fruit delicious smoothie with a dash of coconut milk. Gosh do I miss this! No wonder some of us think we are getting depresed - its the denial of all the great tasting foods dont you think?

I would definitely cut out any cheese.

Are you sure it is IBS?

The reason I ask is that when a doctor saw me he thought it was either IBS or Gallstones so the symptoms are obviously similar.

Turned out it was gallstones and I've now had my gallbladder removed.

May be worth having an ulstrasound scan.

I just read the whole thread and what everybody is saying is right on but when you experiment with food you can't do three or five foods at one time you also need to figure out if you're lactose intolerant then you can't do dairy only stuff that says lactose-free or lactase is added as in milk. Also I've read insoluble fiber is what can tear you up soluble fiber is supposedly what you need to do and we do need fiber but if either doesn't work then I guess you need to stop trying to get it from your green vegetables or whatever is on the fodmap diet, I have been on it for 2 weeks now and starting to feel better less cramping or spasms but still waiting for my biopsies of my upper GI. Nuts raisins whole fruits except for citrus and things should not have bothered you in this you eat it alone and find that it does basically get on the fodmap diet and add one food at a time and never over do it with a food caffeine usually not good and that includes chocolate. Remember also I think I've read if you have a small intestine bacterial overgrowth you need to cut all your sugars out and then once you feel better keep them to a minimum of course you have to worry about a candida outbreak and should not eat yeast in that situation or also sugars if I'm wrong let me know.

Sorry but raisins and nuts can easily affect ibs as the stomach can struggle breaking these down if you have Ibs. I know if I eat nuts I'll be in agony.

I have read that is an old theory you crush them up with your teeth when you eat them or not digesting whole night and whole reason maybe you have an intolerance to nuts or dried fruit I have read that dried fruit may not be good for you but I think all fruit and possibly not citrus slut they used to even think seeds are not good for diverticulitis but I think they're changing that but that's why we have to chew our food well but if you have n problem with the food others with IBS may not I may be wrong

If you are trying to use the FODMAP diet then you have top get the lists od allowable foods from a reliable source and stick to it.

Raisans are not allowed.   Walnuts are allowed.   Some other nuts are allowed in limited amount.   Monash University publish a list

ibsdiets publish a list that looks comprehensive but I dont know how well informed it is.

I find that I can't stray from the list more than one cup of coffee with real milk per day or I suffer.   There are some foods that are supposed to be allowed that affect me.  Too much cane sugar for example.    Too much of any one thing.   I nibble a bit of this and that.   I am now starting to have trouble with meat and that confuses me but bacon and eggs are still OK so I'm not starving.

As a bit of a lolly I find I can eat chrystallised ginger.   Its too sweet to eat much of but its a good change from boring!

I think you have nailed it here. This is a brilliant thread! I know I was an idiot for years messing with elimination of foods and trying as you said toooooo many things at once. Its intersting that Kinder thought she was doing the right thing making her own health bars. Been there, done that - Ill bet it was the dates because as you say it is the sugar. I honestly thought I did not eat sugar as there was none in the house. WRONG! It was in super duper healthy organic, nothing added, coconut water! Ouch! I think most of us here could write a book on what no to do!

Graham I am as confused as you. Monash University tell you one thing yet tge same stuff put out in a book by Prince Alfred contradicts Monash! It gets super hard doesnt it? On your coffee I might have some good news for you. I am +4 on the intolerance scale for milk yet I can drink A2 milk by the litre. The other thing is we are now encouraged to eat full fat as its no longer considered a boogey man! My have some things change for the better. I'm pretty dure that Kinder can get this in NZ.?? Interestingly this little gem from the real world is not mentioned in either hospital. Give a try and let us know how you go.
