Inguinal Hernia

Hello.  My brother in law who works with me had inguinal surgery in 2004 in the UK (He is British).  He as thus moved to the states and works with me in Florida.  He has experienced a lot of pain over the last few weeks and suspecting that the hernia had reappeared went to the emergency room.  He was told that he indeed has the hernia and that he needed to see a specialist.  He visited the specialist yesterday, 07/13/2016 and the surgeon advised that the next date he has available for surgery is 08/23/2016.  He is doubled over in pain and pain meds don't seem to work.  I am so frustrated for him that this is not considered serious enough to warrant surgery sooner.  Do any of you have any suggestions as to what we can do.  The surgeon made it sound that he was doing us a favor and pushing up the surgery to 08/23/2016.  Its six weeks away and I believe that it is too long for him to suffer in pain.  I am so upset with the healthcare system in the USA!  Thanks and I look foward to hearing any suggestions.

I have never heard of that here in the US  If they think it warrants emergency surgery they do it....that is just my experience....where r u located in the US?  Perhaps go to another hospital with your records and ask to please speed it up for you...Thats scary how long ago did u have the surgery?  and how did u know it wasnt right?  I just had mine done in March...just want to be cautious  liz

I have heard over and over again that people that has had the surgery is worse than before..that is why most doctors do not recommend surgery. I was diagnosed in 2014 and I've found different things that helps. I hope your brother gets well.

Did the specialist advise what exactly is causing the pain? If it is incarcerated (ie a section of bowel is trapped) that is an emergency and he should not be waiting any time at all. In my case (inguinal hernia for several years, no surgery, became painful intermittently about a year ago), the pain is usually associated with having been on my feet for too long, or bending over, or not having passed a motion at the right time. It takes a while to subisde but addressing these causes by going to the loo, and lying down, usually works. A flat pad support garment has also helped me enormously to reduce the frequency and intensity of pain. Best of luck.
