    Hi Jollyjack,

I had my prostate removed by robotic surgery on 27th Jan and the catheter removed exactly one week ago today.

I found on day one, that whilst walking around I leaked horribly, there was still a significant amout of urine retained in the bladder that could be emptied at will once I get to the loo. I also found that i was dry at night from the first night.

In general, one week later I am pretty dry while sitting doing nothing and when walking around the house (as well as at night). However stresses and walks across rough fields with the dogs still cause some leakage but not nearly as much as it did in the first few days (even standing up and sitting down caused significant squirting rather than simple leaking in those first few days).

Yes, you should have started exercises before your surgery, post surgery and they should be very much ongoing now!! If you've not started then some truly dedicated work on that sphincter muscle may well pay off smile

Best wishes for speedily regaining control!

    Jollyjack,

i am 15 weeks post RP and about 98-99% dry. Some stress incontinece on sudden movements, lifting, coughing, sneezing and some times Totaly unprovoked. I did a lot of Kegels and started seeing improvement in week 8 and most improvement hapaned in week 11 and 12th. I am still wearing a pad when go to work but nothing at home.

First 4 weeks I barely accumulated anything in my bladder.

Just have some patience. It will improve.

Other big part of SE after RP is ED.

I started Cialis at week 10 using 5 mg on weekdays and 10 mg on weekends.

So far all I have is flat tire. Still total numbness in that area.

When it comes to ED as side effect, I already regretted surgery. Price is to high.

At 52 now, I never was so long without sex. And who knows for how much longer.

I wish I did not go into treatment or at worse I choose radiation.

Read your reply and would like to ask you something - since I have been diagnosed and am deciding the route to take, My PSA is 5.52 and Gleason 3 + 4 and I had decided on the removal of the prostate as my initial ''get it out of me 'reation.  My question is  - what was your PSA /Gleason score ?   Now - about your ED.  I am 62 and have had ED for the last 2 years  - I still enjoy sex by taking the blue tablet. (half  of a 100mg at a time). The doctor put me on the 5mg tablets a few weeks ago  - but I found they didn't do anything for me - so just take the half tablet when I wish to indulge in sex.  My question really is - have you tried taking a larger /full dose tablet of Cialis ??  ALso, though you have a 'flat tyre' .....how is your sex drive??? Do you still desire sex??

I hope that your sex dive returns soon  -  at 52 the operation will give you  in excess of 10 years of living to enjoy a return to a full sex life. .

My sex drive is not affected at all. I want to have sex but my penis I dead. Nothing brings him back to life. And yes I tried 20 mg Cialis as single dose and I did not see any response from my penis. Totally lifeless.

My pre op Gleson was 4+3 and post op was downgraded to 3+4 and I was staged pT2c after surgery. I knew about ED as side effect after surgery but in the worst case scenario I never imagined that I will be affected this much.

Any Other treatment would give me lesser SE of ED.

Now, I have to lieve rest of my life with regrets of having surgery.

Did I gained anything with my choice? I don't think so.

Returning erections after RP is equal to man declared with brain death.

Both are kept arteficialy alive and might come back only by miracle.

If I would be able to go back, I would not take any treatment for 8-10 years and would be enjoying best of life.

      Good luck with your surgery.

I think that we just have to be a bit patient JollyJack. I had my prostectomy 6 weeks ago today. I find that I have good days and bad days, with no pattern as to why I get a big variation of leakage, regardless of how much exercise I get, amount that I drink, or effect from the Kegel Exercises that I have been doing since two months prior to the operation. I weigh the pads and the daily proportion of urine that goes into the pad varies between 7% and 24% of the total amount passed per day. Most often it is around 13%.

I am eagerly looking for an improvement pattern but not found it yet, just have to give it time I suppose. I am somewhat apprehensive since at 74 I am at the top end agewise for getting this Op.

I shall be interested in everyone's progress on our paths to recovery.

    Hi,

Three months after I had RARP I was dry.

Some are dry in a few weeks, some take six months and others a year.

    Some regrettably never achieve dryness.

    Note:

    a. Don't limit yr intake of fluids just to stay dry because you'll be doing your kidneys a disservice;

    b. Don't drink after 7 pm, if you want to be as dry as you can at night; and

    c. Many in here praise kegel exercises, I did them once pre surgery and never afterwards and didn't suffer for it. In my case I thought the physio was a cheap salesman who was selling me stuff I funds want to buy.

    Wishing you a speedy recovery.
